First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Mi scias ke en edukado.net ankaŭ uzas ĝin. Tamen, tio ne signifas ke tio estu ĝusta (ĉiu povas erari kaj fakte mi mem ofte eraras). Laŭ la difinoj de ReVo kaj PIV sesio ne ĝustas ĉi-kaze. Atentu ke PIV parolas pri "serio de...", alidirite "serio de seancoj". Mi opinias ke en edukado oni misuzas intence ĉar ili preferas uzi "sesio" por esti pli simila al la pli internacia (tio estas, pli internacie konata pro la angla kaj eble la franca) radiko por la afero. Eble de ia vidpunkto seanco ankaŭ povas esti sesio, se oni komprenas tion, kiel serion de nur unu seanco. Mi ne intencas ĉi-kaze altrudi mian vidpunkton, sed nur atentigi pri la nune akceptita difino en la vortaroj, kiuj devus taŭge helpi al ĉiu kaj en similaj kazoj, speciale al neokcidentanoj. Nu, mi vidas ke vi komprenas la hispanan, do bve rigardu la vortaron de Fernando de Diego, laŭ tiu vortaro, seanco estas ia kunveno kiu devas okazi plurfoje por ĝin plenumi, rigardu la erojn #4 kaj #5. Sesio estas unu-foja kunveno, rigardu la eron #2. Laŭ tiu ideo, la pli taŭga estas senso anstataŭ seanco. Ankaŭ mi pensas ke Edukado.net estas kiu organizas la eventon kaj ili estas fakte lingvaj fakuloj! Pro tio eble ili ne eraris, kaj se ili eraras tre eble ili korektas siajn erarojn tujtuje --

Ĉi-kaze mi pli fidas PIV (kiu ankaŭ estas redaktita de fakuloj) kaj ReVo, krom diri ke mi opinias ke vi miskomprenas la ekzemplojn montritajn en la FDD-a vortaro, fakte la 11-a ero diras "sesión de espiritismo, seanco" kaj tia afero ne bezonas pli ol unu seanco. Mi nun ne scias kiel ĝuste kompreni la unuan difinon de PIV (periodo) kvankam la ReVo-a diras "kalendara periodo" kaj poste diras "kunsidoJ" kun fina Jo. La dua difino en PIV diras klare "serio de". Laŭ mia kompreno de tiuj difinoj, sesio en la hispana estas pli simila al "temporada de, época de, período de" ol al la hispana "sesión" (ekzemple en Hispanio, oni diras "época de exámenes" al tiuj sinsekvaj tagoj aŭ semajnoj, en kiuj okazas ekzamenoj). Mi ne certas ĉu la hispana havas pli konkretan vorton por sesio. Mi ankoraŭ pensas ke pli ĝustas seanco kaj ke en edukado konscie eraras laŭ propaj ŝatoj aŭ opinioj. Aŭ eble ili tute ne eraras ĉar kutime ili aranĝas sesiojn (plurajn seancojn, eĉ se ĉi tiuj okazas samtempe) kaj simple uzas sesio ĝenerale eĉ se la sesio, nur temas pri simpla seanco. Ĉar por foto entenanta kopirajtitan logon validas aliaj juraj reguloj ol por nura foto de ekz. naturaĵo. Tiaokaze pro kopirajtaj problemoj ĝi ne povos resti en Komunejo. Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Remux,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

@Dannybalanta: Hola Danny, lo que pasa es que la imagen que subiste tiene derechos de autor ("Todos los derechos reservados"), por lo que no se puede subir a Wikimedia Commons. Recuerda que en este lugar solo pueden ser subidas imágenes con licencias libres. Ya que alguien retiró la plantilla, la he vuelto a colocar. --

@Dannybalanta: Sí, es mejor que tu mismo lo escanees y subas la foto, no ha habido problema con los billetes escaneados subidos en Commons. Recuerda que no importa si es con fines educativos, solo las imágenes libre pueden ser subidas a Wikimedia Commons. Es algo tedioso de comprender al principio, pero tiene su razón de ser. --

Dear Remux,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

¡Hola! Gracias por tu participación anterior en Wiki Loves Monuments o en Wikivacaciones. Nos alegra anunciar que otro concurso fotográfico internacional está ocurriendo en este momento: Wiki Loves Earth 2019. La idea del concurso es tomar imágenes de nuestro patrimonio natural – nuestras áreas protegidas. Tu participación nos ayudará a documentar la naturaleza de Colombia y mostrarla al mundo a través de Wikipedia y otros proyectos. Esta es la primera vez que Colombia participa en el concurso, ¡así que necesitamos imágenes hermosas!
