Category:People from China by city edit

Hi, any reason why you changed all people of China categories, such as Category:People of China by city to Category:People from China by city against the de facto world wide standard in Category:People by city by country ? --Foroa (talk) 19:16, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that was a mistake. I thought the rest were named "People from...". I opened Commons:Categories for discussion/2010/07/Category:People by country to discuss this. Rocket000 (talk) 19:25, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unless I consider that's a simple geometry, I've send today a email to the authors requiring their permission. Can you suspend the deletion waiting for their responses. -- Xfigpower (pssst) 15:12, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I removed the deletion template. After having a second look, I think I agree with you that PD-shape covers it, but getting permission would still be preferred just to be safe. Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 19:35, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Category:Proposed Developments in Liverpool edit

Can you explain the logic of deleting this set of categories? You do not seem to have discussed it anywhere.--JIrate (talk) 21:00, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it was unnecessary categorization and incorrectly capitalized. I was going to make a new category for it but I didn't think it was needed. The set of categories got narrower and narrower while only containing a single subcategory each. This chain of practically empty categories make it tedious/annoying to get to the content (which was also only one category Category:Liverpool Waters. If you really think we need some category for "proposed developments" I'll be happy to create one. I just hope there's more content that we can put into it. Apologies for hastily deleting them; categories are easy to make but take time to fully populate and sometimes I just assume a bunch of categories were created just for one image of one subcategory. Rocket000 (talk) 21:13, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I find the process of recatogisation more annoying than anything else. So when I thought that the category was needed I created the whole hierarchy rather than wait till more where added. I then forgot completely about it. I do think we need a cat for this kind of things so creating a top level would be good.--JIrate (talk) 21:32, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Okay, after taking a look at some categories on en.wp, I think there is plenty of stuff to make some new categories. Category:Proposed or planned objects or maybe Category:Proposed or planned projects will serve as as the top level cat (maybe they should be merged?). I'll look around to see how specific we should go at this time. Rocket000 (talk) 21:47, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think in the end you may need to difertiate on type of proposals perhaps Category:Proposed or planned civil engineering projects, to different it from military projects.--JIrate (talk) 21:52, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Graham's Hierarchy of Disagreement.svg edit

Hi. Would you consider changing the colour of the yellow? The yellow text against white (transparent) background is completely illegible. -mattbuck (Talk) 15:01, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

What color should it be? On the transparent background it is hard to read but on white[1] it's not bad, IMO. Feel free to change it yourself; just open it in a text editor and you'll know what to do. Rocket000 (talk) 21:45, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'd just go with making the yellow text slightly darker, or maybe it would be better to just add a black fringe to all the text outside the triangle. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:54, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

edit

Could you have a look at making the delete template autotranslatable? Somehow, when passing the paramters to the sub templates something goes wrong & the check, whether a parameter is empty or not isn't done correctly anymore.--DieBuche (talk) 17:24, 1 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can you give me an example of the incorrect behaviour? seems to work fine (except for the extra |day=). Maybe ask Slomox, the designer of autotranslate. He knows that template the best (and I never did autotranslation by that method before, usually I just switch out the text like in MWheader, not the whole template, or use LangSwitch). Bot Work edit

Hi Rocket000, this to tell that your bot is doing wonderful cleanup work; this will save me days of work. Not always 100 % perfect but no harm that will be cleaned up eventually. The catching of passe partout categories such as living people, people by name, and possibly others (any birth or death year, men, women, males, females, portraits ...) is a great idea. --Foroa (talk) 08:22, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Whoa, thanks for catching that! I'm doing a lot of these semi-automatically while testing out the regexes, I don't know how that got past me... I will rescan all my recent edits and check for stuff like that. Rocket000 (talk) 08:32, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, everything should be cleaned up now. I'm building the ultimate regex to remove all meta-categories from files, however there's a lot to search for. First, I need a list of all the "by xxx" types, so I started Commons:List of meta category criteria. Next, I'll make list for all the other category/gallery-only categories such as "year of (birth|death) missing". This will be much harder so feel free to help me with it. I forgot where that blacklist is for categorizing bots, but I hope to sync it with that because they are ones that add these categories to files 95% of the time. Rocket000 (talk) 10:36, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
A lot of work indeed, good luck, especially in synchronising with other bot lists. Could you make a blacklist (or special cat "meta cats needing revieuw") such as "by nationality" that is by country overhere ? --Foroa (talk) 10:45, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sure, but in the case of "by nationality" I think all uses have been renamed/redirected since July 28 (when I originally did the scan). I see you did some[2]. I filter out "by xxx"s that are used in redirects only, so when I update the list I'll remove it. I'll give you the list needing review (most are probably fine). Rocket000 (talk) 10:58, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
User:Rocket000/by Rocket000 (talk) 11:01, 11 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

(reset indent). when two metacats coincide, it is a bit funny, such as in Category:Education in country by city. --Foroa (talk) 11:12, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I try to catch those. I think the problem is we're confusing the subject (categories with "by xxx" in the title) with what the category is actually sorted by (also "by xxx"). In some cases, I'm not even sure what to go with. Like should Education in country by city be renamed to Education by city by country since that category is literally "by country" so it should go at the end. The "by city" part is part of the subject. At least, that's how I see it. Rocket000 (talk) 11:25, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
There is indeed some harmonisation to be done there. After quite some confusion, I start to develop a clear idea on that, I will come back on that in the coming days. By the way, to be frank, I still don't see the need of those "flat list" cats, unless we can filter them out dynamically for one specific country (or on "country"). --Foroa (talk) 12:29, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree they're not that useful, but I think they are somewhat useful for maintenance purposes: generate lists, provide an overview of what we have, statistics, category sortkey standardization, aid in category naming issues, etc. They're easy to make (and destroy) and we already had "by alphabet/name" categories which are basically the same so someone thought they were a good idea. The topical flat categories are next. This is why I've been adding |topic= to everything. Rocket000 (talk) 13:15, 17 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Rocket000, it seems that you suppressed a file called Janeskh11leakedphoto.jpg some time ago because it was unsourced. Category:Neighborhoods of Málaga edit

Hello Rocket000. May I please ask you why have you replaced the category:Neighbourhoods in Málaga for the American English spelling? Is there a consensus about this? Thanks, tyk (talk) 20:47, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

The main reason I renamed that was because it used "in" instead of "of" like the rest. The switch in spelling was done solely for consistency to match the rest in Category:Neighborhoods in Spain. It was the only one using the British spelling. As far as consensus goes, I'm sure both spellings are fine. I don't think there's been any discussion about it (fortunately). We are a multilingual site. Getting category names in English, any kind of English, is hard enough. We can't be too picky about trivial spelling differences like they are over on en.wp. Rocket000 (talk) 21:05, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
In that case, since we cannot be picky about it, I would be most grateful if you revert it to the original spelling. I don't see why a European place has to use American spelling instead of European spelling. In the Spanish and Portuguese wikis, where we have the same situation about spelling, the golden rule is to respect the spelling chosen by the editor that initiated a category or article. I think is a good rule. Regards, tyk (talk) 21:30, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
You are being picky and it sounds like you are biased towards one of them. You didn't respect the spelling chosen by the creator of Category:Neighborhoods in Spain or the spelling chosen by the creators of the other subcategories. Our golden rule here is that category names should be consistent. And I think that's a good rule. So I could have either renamed one single category that need renaming anyway (which I did), or rename all the others to match the spelling you prefer. Sorry. Consistency trumps personal preference. Rocket000 (talk) 21:38, 5 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
To start with, the use of "in" is not incorrect at all and there are many other similar categories which use it. The category:Neighbourhoods in Málaga does not only belong to Neighbourhoods in Spain, it also belongs to neighbourhoods by city, where both European and American English are used. If both options are acceptable, I don't see why you have to impose your preference over other editors. I am the one that works regularly in that category, I created it and I chose to use European English. You cannot just impose your preference on me. I am not biased for the simple reason that English is not my native language and I have no interest at all in getting involved in whatever fights English speakers have over spelling, but I, like the vast majority of Spaniards, am more used to the European spelling and you have to respect me. So, please revert it as it was originally and don't make me do it myself. As you can see on my contributions I am quite busy with other things and don't want to do the same thing twice. Thank you, tyk (talk) 19:35, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's not my preference. My preference was to change one category instead several categories. I personally use both spelling interchangeably, and I didn't even think about which is which when I did this. I just noticed one was spelled differently than the others. Yes, not all of them are the same, like Neighbourhoods of Canada (which if I ever harmonize with the others by changing "in" to "of", I would leave the spelling as it is since all the subcategories are spelled that way), but we should try for consistency at least on each category level. Likewise, I have no opinion on the preposition used. Consistency for usability, predictability, and technical reasons were my only concerns. If it's that important to you, you may ask (via COM:CFD) that all the neighbourhood categories of Spain (or even all neighborhood categories) by renamed to use your preferred spelling. I don't see any reason to change it other than you like one better than the other, so I won't do it myself but someone else might. It doesn't matter to me as long as they follow the same naming convention. If you change only one them however, I will revert. Thanks. Rocket000 (talk) 19:57, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please sign your comments with ~~~~. Only the copyright holder can license the work. It appears that American Football Argentina owns the rights to the logo so we would need their permission to host the image here under a free license. On their website, it says "Todos los derechos reservados. All rights reserved. No duplicar de ninguna forma sin el permiso de Football Americano Argentina Do not duplicate in any form without the permission of Football Americano Argentina". If you think they will be willing to do this, you can follow the procedure on COM:OTRS. Rocket000 (talk) 19:38, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Removed image edit

Hi Rocket000. You removed the image 'resound.jpg' for copyright violation. Why is this? The copyright is owned by the a cappella group 'Out of the Blue' whose discography I added the image to. Ootboxford (talk) 20:10, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Because only the copyright holder can release the work under a free license. If they are willing to do this, we will need some way to verify it. Please see COM:OTRS for more information. Alternatively, you may upload it to your local Wikipedia as "fair use" (if they allow that, which the English Wikipedia does). Commons does not accept "fair use" material. Rocket000 (talk) 20:14, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I am confused. I am a member of 'Out of the Blue' and so surely I an entitled to release the work, am I not? I would happily upload the image on Wikipedia alone, apart from being urged to use Wikimedia Commons instead. If it would just be better for me to upload the image on the group's Wikipedia profile, let me know.Ootboxford (talk) 15:49, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Being a member of a group does not make one a copyright holder unless you were explicitly given control of said group's logo. Either way, OTRS permission would still be required to verify this. To avoid that hassle, it may be better just to upload to Wikipedia under a fair use clause. Rocket000 (talk) 16:36, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Oroville superfund.jpg edit

I logged on today and found that this file was deleted on 8/31 with a comment of copyvio. Can you explain to me how something that is in the public domain (USGS topographic maps that are put out by the United States Federal government) can be a copyright violation? Is it because I added a color block outlining the shape of something to the map? As I understand public domain, it is available for any and all uses, including modification.

Epolk (talk) 23:22, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I used the wrong edit summary. I meant to say it was missing a source. It was marked for deletion since 26 August. It may be a work of the US government but there was no link or information about where you got it from. I'll restore it so you can add this information. Rocket000 (talk) 23:28, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I am in school right now so I am not checking this site very often. That's why I missed the original delete info. I made this in 2007 so I can't recall exactly where I got the map but I will try to find it again. Epolk (talk) 23:45, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion edit

Please be more careful when consider speedy deletion requests as here. Controversial undiscussed requests shouldn't be satisfied so precipitately. --ŠJů (talk) 21:57, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Empty categories that are marked for speedy deletion (because that's one of the criteria) and have no discussion or other sign that they are wanted is not what I would call "controversial". Just recreate it (like you did) if you want to make use of it. It's not something you need to discuss. Rocket000 (talk) 22:12, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
When a category is empty, an administrator should consider why and when it was created and why and when emptied. An administrator shouldn't help thoughtlessly to incompetent and controversial movings. Not every "speedy" request is legitimate. Such actions are repeatedly infirmed (User talk:Snowmanradio#Birds at Zoos? User talk:Snowmanradio#In vs. at). --ŠJů (talk) 22:23, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
You're right. I'm sorry, I should have check to see if the contents were moved out-of-process. Rocket000 (talk) 22:25, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

[4] edit

I have reverted this edit as unacceptable. To hide the WikiGnomes by Ironie category is to cause the included images to have no visible categories, which will cause _your bot_ to later tag them as uncategorized. On the contrary, self-referential humour such as this is properly categorized under the type of humour it is. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 22:02, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

No, we don't consider "by user" categories part of the main category tree. They should be in regular categories too. I'll rename it if you prefer. Rocket000 (talk) 22:07, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have categorized them into Category:WikiGnomes. Rocket000 (talk) 22:15, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

What makes my category special? edit

Thanks a lot. If you read my posts on the matter, you would know why I oppose this. Why is Commons literally "hiding" the image source like that to all those users who use a default setting that turns hidden categories off? "Overcatting" is a poor argument when some files have dozens of categories, and there will never be more than one author cat.

And no, I am not famous like, say, Category:Ansel_Adams (who never worked on Commons, yet strangely enough isn't "hidden" - despite the only benefit of that PUBLIC category being that a user can find files created by that guy!). Similar to others who disagree with this "policy" of hiding the authors of files, I think it is RUDE of Commons to simply anonymise in such a systematic approach. Sure - users who have hidden categories set to "off" can still see my files by clicking through about three extra steps. Great. How likely will that occur? This simple change probably reduces the people browsing my pictures because they like my pictures by 95%.

I uploaded over a thousand images to Commons, many of them used in Wikipedias all over - and I donated them all as public domain. You can say I have thereby lost all say about them, including the right to mark them as "mine". Great attitude. Ingolfson (talk) 09:23, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Simple vanity. There's only one other user category that isn't hidden out of 1000s, so that's why I asked what makes it special. Some people don't like the idea of personal categories to begin with, making them hidden is the compromise (can you categorize articles you create on Wikipedia? Or even images there?). I think it's RUDE to think you're entitled to special treatment. Not really... drop the attitude. I'm not going to fight over this so do what you want. Rocket000 (talk) 09:32, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yup - you said something quite correctly there. It IS vanity. Also known as pride in my work. I'd like people who like my work have an easy way of looking at other examples of my work and maybe use them. It is a pretty small thing in a world where most people would never PD-license anything, let alone thousands of images - and the systematic approach of hiding the categories is taking that away. Why should I not be peeved about this? I am not asking for special treatment when all I want is the status quo to be retained that I have worked under for years - I am asking for my personal choice to be respected. Or, if the consensus is against me, for someone at least show me that there's a consensus, rather than two or three editors who are busy "cleaning up" in that particular area of Commons. I do understand that it can be hard to create a standardisation because there's always some people who don't like the standard (in this case, it's me, but I have been on the other side too). Hope you understand my point better now. Ingolfson (talk) 09:44, 12 September 2010 (UTC
I take pride in my work too, and to be honest, being silent about it gives me even more satisfaction (everything I do is PD, not just my limited work here - it's the same reason people donate a million dollars anonymously), so I'm aware that I have some trouble understanding people on the other side (well, minus the PD thing in this case). Sorry if you were offended by my edit summary. I was thinking on a completely technical level and forgot the human aspect. Rocket000 (talk) 09:58, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, and I wasn't following the "breathe deeply, THEN respond" rule. Re the "silent" - well, I have (for a variety of reasons) chosen to use a pseudonym here rather than (anything linking to) my real name, so my work will be extremely unlikely to ever bring me renown, even if it was judged worthy of that. But this is a very Wikipedia-thing, this invisibleness. Some people want recognition (far more than the type I am arguing for here), and if they do, I argue that that's fine. They are still doing something outside of the classic "show me the money" paradigm. I think especially for projects like Commons, which are in some ways crucially UNLIKE Wikipedia (because the end result is not necessarily collaborative, just the framework that allows you to produce said work with its help), we need to make sure that the system allows those people to contribute too. I am not going to stop contributing in a huff now - but others may never even start, driven off by exactly that anonymity inherent in the wiki system. Ingolfson (talk) 10:10, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think showing appreciation for users' contributions is a good thing and I definitely appreciate the fact that we aren't like Wikipedia. I just always saw other avenues such as FP, QI, VI, POTY, MOI, etc. as the way to do it. As for finding other images done by a certain user, I have always used the gallery tool (or just look at their upload log with "Prettylog" gadget on). I never have browsed via a user category and thus don't see the usefulness. I guess being an experienced technically-minded user with hidden categories always shown makes me biased. :) Rocket000 (talk) 10:21, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and thanks for the offer of "I'm not going to fight over this so do what you want", but I sort of expected this kind of thing anyway, so I hadn't reverted your edit myself.

Again, I won't leave Commons in a flurry of peevedness at yours (or now, Pieter's) actions but I wonder about how these kind of actions affect the many users who upload only a small amount of stuff, and are then faced with such edits (not specifically about this argument anymore - more about how we here, on Commons, deal with disagreements, or cases where users do something that "isn't OK" with the regulars - especially where a grey area without clear policy exists). metacat on Category:Synthesizers by method. edit

  Resolved

Hi, Rocket000.

Please stop adding metacat on arbitrary categories including Category:Synthesizers by method, etc. I created this category to collect media related to algorithm/method of music synthesizers. But I don't intend to set metacat, because algorithm/method of music synthesizers has some ambiguity which leads some difficulty on categorization. And Category:Unidentified foobar is sometime not useful because most hot information are always hidden on it. Therefore, I want to remove metacat from Category:Synthesizers by method. best regards, --Shoulder-synth (talk) 10:51, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Probably you might be adding metacat to "category for categories" based on category name. In that case, I might have to rename Category:Synthesizers by method to Cateogry:Synthesizing methods. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 11:39, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you are right. metacat is applied to categories that are named in such way, i.e. "by xxx", that logically they shouldn't contain anything but categories since the "by xxx" refers to the way they are organized. Rocket000 (talk) 22:09, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Is it an agreement of the community ? Or your own local rule ? --Shoulder-synth (talk) 23:20, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Neither. We are not talking about policy or guideline. It's simply logic. A image can't be "by xxx" only categories can be. "by xxx" indicates an alternative way of organizing files. Placing files directly into that category is not organizing it at all. Every synthesizer has a method, right? So if you put files in Category:Synthesizers by method without categorizing by method it is no different than putting them in Category:Synthesizers. Maybe taking a look at CAT:MC will help you understand. Rocket000 (talk) 23:28, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Rocket000,
 1. Your criteria, "'by xxx' always means meta category", seems to be inadequate. It may be only a "local naming convention" not yet authorized by community. For exmple, direct descendants of "Categories by xxx" may be always meta category, but indirect descendants are not necessarily meta category. It should be decided based on consensus of each authors and users relating the categories. If you want to avoid the conflict, you should form some consensus before running a bot.
 2. Although music synthesizers are implemented on various synthesis algorithms, the information which algorithms are used on specific synthesizer are not always unveiled. Instead, more loose classification such as "synthesis methods" (additive/subtractive/FM/..., for more, see here), "implementation type" (mechanical/analog/digital/software/ ...), etc. are widely used. But most synthesizers support multiple methods (ex. SCI P5 supports additive/subtractive/FM methods), so it is not realistic to categorize all synthesizers into "by method" categories (The result may become very complicated and yield more arguments). Therefore, Category:Synthesizers by method should keep without metacat.
--Shoulder-synth (talk) 02:50, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Shoulder-synth, you might want something like Category:Unidentified synthesizer methods under Category:Synthesizers by method. - Jmabel ! talk 01:17, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Jmabel. I know the way you said, and already used in other categories. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 02:49, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry, you don't seem to get it. A category designed to contain only categories should not contain images. There's lots of "by xxx" categories that I don't add Metacat to because they are not meta categories so don't say that's my only criteria or it's done arbitrarily. Except for obvious cases like "by country", I review each one before my bot does it's work. Since you seem to think only in terms of written policy instead of common sense, established practice, and logic, here's a link (and no I did not write that part). If you still have a problem with it, either rename the category if it's not a true metacat (ask me and I'll gladly do it for you), or please report my actions on COM:AN/U if you think I am the problem (I won't take it personally; input from others is never a bad thing). Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 03:18, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for kindly response. I should rename the category into Category:Sound synthesis types (based on en:wiki's w:en:Category:Sound synthesis types), to keep images under it. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 03:39, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Would you want me to do it for you? I'll give the command to Siebot. Rocket000 (talk) 03:52, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Nevermind, I see you already did it manually. :) In the future, when you wish to rename a category, simply drop me a note and I'll make a bot do it if you want. Save you some work. Rocket000 (talk) 04:03, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your kindly offer. I've done it manually, and I change the subject of this thread. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 11:31, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Cool, I'm glad it all worked out. BTW, thanks for all your work in this area. If you ever need some help renaming categories in the future, you know who to ask. Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 11:36, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Stop edit

Stop is for CommonsDelinker, not Siebot. As far as I know as soon as Siebot starts working on it the only way to stop it is to block it (I've tried changing/removing requests after I saved and it didn't work). I think putting stop on there stops Delinker until Byran starts it again. as it doesn't seem to be working now. (The same goes for blocking blocks, unblocking them won't make them automatically resume their work.) Rocket000 (talk) 06:32, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

My apologies, but someone should make that a lot clearer on the delinker page! - Jmabel ! talk 14:57, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hidden edit

hi Rocket, what features got lost?--DieBuche (talk) 00:48, 20 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well first of all, the examples stopped working. They didn't even have an arrow. The template is designed so it can be used two ways. Either, title or titlecontentend (see [5] for a case where it doesn't make sense to wrap the whole thing in a template). The last method was lost with your changes. Didn't you see the comments in there? The {demo} feature was removed too. Rocket000 (talk) 01:10, 20 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Category:Abandoned_villages_in_USA edit

Per your comment at the deletion discussion — I've gotten enough grief from people who don't want to speedy delete images that violate the terms of the GFDL (I've found several images uploaded here that claim to be own works by uploaders but are actually taken from en:wp images by different individuals, but none of the admins who reviewed these images seem to think that it's possible to have a copyvio of a GFDL image), so I really do very little with speedy deletion. Thanks for taking care of the situation. Nyttend (talk) 11:49, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

If they give you grief for nominating it, there's not much difference between speedy or non-speedy—you're still preforming a task that results in the file/page being deleted. Usually they just come after the deleting admin. :) Rocket000 (talk) 11:59, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but I mean that admins have told me to stop nominating images for speedy because they're GFDL; it was as if I were being disruptive for attempting to get images deleted that violated GFDL. Nyttend (talk) 12:27, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
File:Kitebaording.jpg is one example of what I'm talking about — it's an unacknowledged copy and thus a copyvio of en:File:DV Test 299.jpg. Nyttend (talk) 22:57, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I wish I could just delete things like that to make people learn to add all the necessary info (especially the author when the license requires it) and to get the license right... but it is fixable so if I did people would be like "why didn't you just add the info!?" Not my job, but oh well. Rocket000 (talk) 23:08, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

MetaCats of Italy edit

Hi Rocket000. All sub-categories of Category:Municipalities in Italy by region are metacats ("Municipalities in NameRegion"); and so inside them the provincial sub-categories ("Municipalities in the province of NameProvince"). It is possible to give them automatically the template metacat? Different way I have to open each category to give it. Thank you very much if you can do something. --DenghiùComm (talk) 19:32, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, technically they aren't meta categories since there's nothing in the name to suggest its members must be categories. They are simply "main categories". For example, you could add a image of a municipality of, say Abruzzo. Category:Municipalities in Italy by region is a metacat because it's illogical to say a image is "by something"; it refers the the category structure itself (the way things are organized), thus it can only contain categories by nature. Category:Municipalities in Abruzzo on the other hand refers only to the subject matter, not the data structure. I only like using metacat on true metacats, not just any category that should only contain categories (there's lots of them). It's kinda hard to explain this. Rocket000 (talk) 19:50, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I understand what you means. In our "history", for a year these categories have a lot of images, and in summer 2009 I orded all by municipality, or province. Since last summer all people respect this. People put now not-categorised images of italian municipality not in these categories but in the province category or in the region category; and this is correct; if you know the municipality, you don't need to put the image in a generic municipality category, but in his specific; if you don't know the municipality category (or if this doesn't exist), you put the image in the upper category, and this is the Province or the Region. This is actually our situation. But I understand what you means, and for me it's ok. Have a nice evening, --DenghiùComm (talk) 21:59, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Missing parameters of move request edit

Hello. When you request a moving as here, please don't forget to mention your reason or proposal or other suggestion. It can be difficult to distinguish when you disagree only with the capitalization or spelling and when you have also some other objection to the factual definition and description of the category. Thank You. --ŠJů (talk) 02:37, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Did you read the template? It's actually . I made it exactly for situations where I don't know what it should be renamed to. You did exactly what you were supposed to, add the parameters. That how the template works. :) Rocket000 (talk) 02:57, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
BTW, [6] does nothing. Rocket000 (talk) 02:59, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Even if you don't know an ideal new name, you have surely some reason why you request a moving. Such a reason should be mentioned, if possible. Sometimes can be difficult to soothsay it. – Ad "btw", the date is not displaying for as long as the first parameter isn't filled but it notates when the move discussion was started and it will display at the right time. --ŠJů (talk) 23:29, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
If I have a specific reason I usually add it, otherwise, I don't think something vague like "bad name", "I don't like it", etc. are worth saying. It's for obvious cases only. As the template says, if you think the name if fine, remove the template. So if it's not obvious, remove the template, then I'll have to give a reason if I still think it's a bad name. These go into a special category so you can always ignore them if you want. Rocket000 (talk) 23:35, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

See this template, Stub sympol hidden color from the background, I wish make it solidifies in the middle --minhhuy*= (talk) 23:30, 25 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, it's not supposed to be solid. It's only a partial circle to represent a stub (a partial article). Do you want me simply change the color of File:Start-icon.svg to the pink stub color? Maybe you can make a PNG version to show me want you want it to look like, then I'll make a SVG for you. Rocket000 (talk) 01:03, 26 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why? They contain the number. Nevermind, it's not important. I don't care. Rocket000 (talk) 16:27, 28 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
A number being used as a year is more specific than a pure abstract number. Please consult File:Over-categorization.svg... AnonMoos (talk) 21:46, 28 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
It may be over-categorization, but not that kind. Rocket000 (talk) 21:58, 28 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

"It's a useful navigational cat" means that it's not only a useful cat, it's useful for navigation too, something that is thwarted by hiding it. There are several Flordia-related themes for which the categiory is itself a useful grouping: particularly motor racing on Daytona Beach in the 1930s and the general social history of Florida's tourist trade. This isn't just the usual "Photos by Fred" source category. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:32, 1 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

That may be, but they should be categorized in content categories. Like "Motor racing on Daytona Beach in the 1930s". Many hidden cats are used for navigation. Rocket000 (talk) 00:04, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your unblock of Elkawe edit

Unblocking User:Elkawe was a bad idea. It is apparent that he does not understand copyright because he consistently labels as his own work images (whether PD-ineligible or not) that are in fact derivative works. Whether or not he acted in bad faith is irrelevant; what matters is that he is a risk to the project as long as he does not convince us that he understands the problem with his uploads. I'd have had no problem with an unblock as soon as he convinces us that he understands copyright.

I only became aware of him because I was processing an official request for deletion via Commons:OTRS by a rights owner of a map which he photographed and falsely labeled as own work. In my opinion, the Foundation rather narrowly escaped legal action in that case. Are you willing to take the responsibility for the foundation's legal exposure should Elkawe continue to violate the copyright of others because of your unblock? Sandstein (talk) 11:28, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sandstein does the exact same thing, "falsely claiming" that this abdication is own work. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 12:33, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think the block was totally unjustified. If the Foundation is really in legal trouble, they have a lawyer whose job it is to protect them, not ours. By all means, feel free to discuss my unblock on Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Blocks_&_protections#Please_unblock_Elkawe and see what others have to say. I stand by my action. which gives "Stadtmuseum Köln" (empty string) --Jarekt (talk) 19:00, 18 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I misunderstood how you were planning to use the default parameter. I thought you were using it as a way to set the default language, not the default text. But I now see that my method doesn't work. Rocket000 (talk) 23:36, 18 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I changed it back to your way. Hopefully, I got it right. I hate editing templates so heavily used they error out when saving. bot edit

hello my friend,
what about a bot

 • running on categories from Category:Taxon categories
 • only on categories named "Category:Xxxxxx yyyyyy"
 • only on categories containing "Species|Xxxxxx yyyyyy|" (in Taxonavigation)
 • transforming or or or in

The important case we ignore is . Cheers Liné1 (talk) 05:18, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Good idea. My favorite (and lazy) way, that being a simple regex find & replace with AWB, won't work here since it involves obtaining and manipulating the title (" " → "|") and/or changing case (there's no ToUpper function). I started working on a custom module. So far I got code for normalizing categories (uppercasing the first letters, removing superfluous spaces,...), and creating the category string. Tomorrow, hopefully, I'll have it up and running. Rocket000 (talk) 07:14, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sniff, sound so cool. Cheers Liné1 (talk) 17:46, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

:-) Well, I'm almost done. There's just a couple annoying little bugs I have to fix. Rocket000 (talk) 16:49, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I just did a 50 edit test run... It works good but there's so many things I didn't think of. For example, how to deal with genus name parent categories that are disambiguated. The category for these need to be but since my bot uses the species category name to form the category it adds, it leaves out the " (genus)". There's not too many so I'll just deal with these manually. Hybrids with '×' are another special case. Subspecies, ditto. Anyway, overall I think I did pretty good for a non-programmer. :) I'm pre-parsing out the categories that don't need fixing right now, then I'll flip it on automatic mode. If you have any ideas to generate another list to work on, I'll be happy to run the bot on more categories (I have the latest database dump already) . Rocket000 (talk) 18:04, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Done 1,316 corrected. Taking a break now, but I'll refine my filters and do another run sometime soon because I know there's more I can fix. Rocket000 (talk) 23:02, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

So cool. I saw some category transformed in Category (that is cool) + some spaces suppressed (like [[ Catego)(cool again). Again, again, again. Cheers Liné1 (talk) 07:36, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
There is a bug in my algorithm: not all species of a genus have a Taxonavigation: if you look at Category:Alosa, your bot has patched 3 of the seven species, because the 4 others did not have a Taxonavigation! Liné1 (talk) 09:12, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, only the categories in Category:Taxon categories were worked on. Rocket000 (talk) 16:32, 23 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

incertae sedis edit

Hi Rocket000, is it possible to create an incertae sedis category within Noctuidae? I found some genera with uncertain genus assignment. --Olei (talk) 10:11, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I can't respond to that question, but in the Taxonavigation you can put Genus|?| that will display a uniformized incertae sedis. Best regards Liné1 (talk) 11:05, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! --Olei (talk) 12:51, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Another bot edit

Hello my friend,
I did a mistake (again ;-)) a long time ago with Taxasource label "Kew".
The database is not THE kew database, but one of the multiple provided by kew.
So I renamed the label "Kew World Checklist" (Of course I kept the other for migration purpose) because the Database is called Word Checklist of select plant families and is hosted by Kew Garden website.
Could you run a bot on Category:Taxasource to correct to transform source=Kew}} in source=Kew World Checklist}}
I know I abuse, but it is for the better cause.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 06:50, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ok, working on it. I assume you want "source=Kew|" converted also. Rocket000 (talk) 07:02, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks again. You saved me. Liné1 (talk) 13:32, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Updating template tysp? edit

The type species of a genus is not always a name in use. Ex Pachystachys riedelianus is the typus of the genus, but at the same time synonymous under Pachystachys spicata. Could the template be altered to include a "redirection area" or a new template be made for this type of names? Uleli (talk) 18:48, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, can you give me an example for what you mean by "redirection area"? Something like this:
Type species Pachystachys riedeliana Nees [= Pachystachys spicata (Ruiz & Pav.) Wassh.]
Or do you want the link to simply go to the current name, e.g. Pachystachys riedeliana? Rocket000 (talk) 19:45, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Category:Statues in Italy by subject by city edit

Hi Rocket000. I asked to Delinker to change the name of the category above in "Statues in Italy by city by subject". You cancelled my request by the opinion that "it's correct, the category is by city so it goes last". I wish to explain you why I disagree. The difference is clear. Actually the categories "Statues in Bologna, Brescia, Catania,... by subject" are "Statues in Italy by city by subject". Categories like "Statues of angels, of bishops, of Madonna, ... in Bologna, Brescia, Catania, etc." are "Statues in Italy by subject by city". This is the reason because I requested to delink the Category above: for the subcategories that it contains, simply this name is wrong, it's not correct! We have a parallel situation with Category:Reliefs in Italy by city by period and Category:Reliefs in Italy by period by city. The names that we give to the art categories in Italy do not follow a vague idea, but are done correspondingly a very clear situation. It's not possible to mistake! Different way we will have a messy situation wich will be very difficult to manage. I hope that I was able to explain you my thought. Soon I will ask again Delinker to change the name of this Category. Best regards, --DenghiùComm (talk) 15:49, 30 October 2010 (UTC) PS: Thank you so much always for your work on categories, flat lists, etc. It's really a big help for my work on italian categories! I hope that I give correctly the different "metacats" follow your instructions. If I make some mistakes, please tell me! Thank you!Reply

I always follow a simple rule when naming categories like this. The last "by xxx" refers to the way the category is organized. For example, Category:Art by country by period, Category:Art by period by country, Category:Paintings by country by period, etc., however, I'm aware not everyone follows this rule and in fact does the opposite. Honestly, I'm not sure which way is better, nor do I have a strong preference either way. I just thought the last "by xxx" should always refer to the way the category itself is arranged and not the way the subcategories are arranged. Foroa and I discussed this awhile ago and agreed it needs some kind of harmonizing. It appears someone else thinks these should be renamed as well so I won't get involved. Feel free to remake your request and any others. Hopefully, whatever happens will result in consistency. Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 18:45, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
BTW, I'm glad you find my category work helpful for your category work. :) We're looking for more input on Commons:Categories for discussion/2010/10/Category:Flat categories. Rocket000 (talk) 19:05, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, dear Rocket000 for your explanation. I think that the different way to understand the same situation is a typically exemple for the different forma mentis of people with mediterranean-latin culture, from people they have a nordic-german-english culture. By the nordic culture a lot of things are reverted (the date, the sassone possessive case; in german the verb at the end, the numbers, etc.). By the latin culture this is not, and the conceptual order is very simple, from left to right, from the subject to the verb. So we from the South, we have really problem when something is sayd 1 - 2, that this is to understand 2 - 1. Never mind...! I requested again Delinker to change two categories, and he just do it. Thank you too for the informations about the discussions about Categories and flat lists: I wasn't informed that there are these discussions! Cheers, --DenghiùComm (talk) 15:59, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bot edit

Hello my friend,
What about running a bot on Category:Taxon categories to transform {{Translation table|inline=o|hidetitle=o|width=100% in {{VN| ???
You could ask Commons talk:WikiProject Tree of Life if you want a greater consensus.
Cheers Liné1 (talk) 18:04, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, as the creator of VN I would kinda feel like I was forcing my template on people, but as far as I can tell everyone that works in this area supports VN over the old way. I will look into how many are left and if anyone is creating new TOL pages/categories with Translation table. Rocket000 (talk) 18:51, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
