Toga picta edit

Can you provide any reference detail for  ? Date? Is it from a tomb- or mural- painting? What site is it from? Where is it kept? Thanks EraNavigator (talk) 11:27, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, I don't have the foggiest memory of where I got the file from over three years ago. I realize that this is problematic, and images need to have reliable source info. I guess I didn't realize that then. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 14:32, 5 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. I've done a little digging, as the description didn't seem right (the style's more Etruscan). The Image is from the Francois Tomb in Vulci, 350-330 BC. [1] (halfway down the page). It is sometimes interpreted as a possible model for the Roman toga picta. The figure is identified as Vel Saties. He may be performing augury or a form of auspices - his gaze is on a bird in flight. The smaller, rather dwarfish figure holds the bird's mate - a tame or captive woodpecker. Or else (in Mary Beard's ever-skeptical estimation) Vel Saties might merely be watching his son playing. The connection - if any - between this image and the Roman triumphal toga picta is unknown. Your image is reversed, I'm afraid. Is it also possible to turn up the purple a bit on Vel Saties' "toga"? This picture is potentially useful for several articles once labeled! Regards. Haploidavey (talk) 22:28, 19 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the work you're putting in to clarify the situation here. I haven't been active on Commons since 2006, and wasn't very involved even then. I mostly do MediaWiki development these days. I was forgetting that Commons isn't quite as wiki-like as Wikipedia, so I guess you didn't feel you could just notice that I was inactive and fix it up. As far as I'm concerned, you and anyone else should certainly be bold and improve any of the images I've uploaded (of which there are very few) however you see fit. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 17:59, 22 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
