Category:Fishing ships of Taiwan edit

Hi Stunteltje
I saw the change you made to the Category:Fishing ships of Taiwan. I've picked up this as an idea and made new subcategories:

The more categories from different areas we have for one pic to better, so thanks a lot.
I wish you a happy new year and all the best to you Lord Koxinga (talk) 13:43, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about all the changes, but in the categories by country it is not clear exactly if there should be an "in" or "of". In the most cases it's in.
Best wishes again Lord Koxinga (talk) 14:04, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
No problem if you change things, as long as it fits in the simple system: "in" means: by location and "of" means by posession. That's all. So a ship in Taiwan can be located IN Taiwan, but if she shows the Dutch flag is she a ship OF the Netherlands. In this example both categories apply. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:58, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the answer: Did you check the 2 new categories up there too?
Best wishes Lord Koxinga (talk) 20:27, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, i don't see any trouble in these categories. It is a pity that File:2010 07 13620 6441 Chenggong Chenggong Fishing Harbor Taiwan.JPG and File:2010 07 10780 4880 Dayuan Township.JPG don's show the name of the ships or the flag state. --Stunteltje (talk) 22:14, 31 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi, that with the missing information about the ships is not good, but I've never planned to go into that domain. On the other hand it's not so easy to get info (language problem).
Anyway it's not the last time that I'm in Taiwan. I try to get better concerning that in future. --Lord Koxinga (talk) 14:21, 1 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Very good, that's all we can ask for. I myself found a lot of ships on my camera without this information. So be it. Hopefully someone recognises such ships. --Stunteltje (talk) 16:54, 1 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Tall Ships' Races edit

Hi Stunteltje, I'm currently deleting categories from Category:Tall Ships' Races 2008 which you had added, such as Category:Brest 2008 or Category:Kiel Week 2008 etc. Just letting you know that en:Tall Ships' Races is a specific event, not just "any" races involving tall ships. Thanks, Ibn Battuta (talk) 21:33, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Didn't recognise that, so no problem at all. Thanks for the message. --Stunteltje (talk) 21:41, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Corwin images edit

I am a little confused as to why you set up entirely separate categories. I'd suggest at least setting up a cross reference. Also, I would suggest that images not of the ship or crew be in a sub-category, perhaps Category:Images from voyages of the USRC Thomas Corwin. I'd like to get your input before changing things, tho.Dankarl (talk) 22:49, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

What I did is nothing more than splitting the categories by name, as ships can be found by name in the specific categories. I used the information from the description on the English wikipedia. No problem at all if you create a separate category for the expedition. I planned to do it myself, but wasn't able to choose a correct name for the expedition. It is very usefull to make cross references indeed, so please do. --Stunteltje (talk) 23:21, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Péniches vs Barges edit

Hi,
For me, péniche is something like that and barge is something like that. And I wanted to decrease the number of images in Category:Barges of France by transfering some of them in Category:Péniches. But I am not a specialist... What is your opinion ?
On another point, on the several "péniches", the name is well known. But do you know how to add the ENI number ? --Tangopaso (talk) 19:06, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

The images you refer to are both barges, only the first one is a lengthened péniche. Péniches are ships of 38,70 X 5,05 X 2,20 meter, definately intended for the canels of France. You can find my barge here. There is a special site where you can find a lot of ENI numbers, even in French. http://www.debinnenvaart.nl/ Unfortunately not every ship is in that databasa. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:56, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
You live on a barge? That would be cool. Geo Swan (talk) 01:54, 19 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Can I ask for your nautical advice? edit

File:Bumboat visits naval vessel in Guantanamo.jpg

Casemates, like those in this image, do you think I am correct this is a feature of pre-WW1 vessels?

Do you think the date of the image can be determined by the uniforms the sailors are wearing?

Thanks! Geo Swan (talk) 20:16, 19 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am very sorry, but unfortunately my knowledge of historical vessels and circumstances is very restricted. I realy don't know. --Stunteltje (talk) 20:35, 19 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Help edit

Hi,

Some time ago, you helped provide quite a bit of information about a Tanzanian ferry ship and I was hoping you could do the same with File:Container Ship.jpg. Do you have any idea about the type, capacity, model etc? --Muhammad (talk) 00:33, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Have a look at Category:IMO 9220861 --Stunteltje (talk) 08:00, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot :- ) --Muhammad (talk) 13:38, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Waarom ... edit

... hebt je deze Category verwijdert? Groetjes. --Schiwago (talk) 21:37, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

--Stunteltje (talk) 21:41, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK, ik heb het begrepen, dank je! --Schiwago (talk) 21:59, 1 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Carradale edit

There is an image in Category:Carradale (ship). It doesn't look the same as Category:Carradale (ship, 1889), but I could be mistaken. More information at Commons_talk:State_Library_of_Queensland#ships_batch. Thank you, --John Vandenberg (chat) 09:57, 6 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I assume it is the same ship. Number of sails, lines accross the sails and number of forsails identical. I placed her in the same category. If not correct, somebody can change the category per ship. I think it is not so logical to have ships in Australia with that size with the same name in the same era. --Stunteltje (talk) 14:29, 6 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I don't know much about ships, but I agree with your logic. Thank you. John Vandenberg (chat) 01:22, 7 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

boat categories to be added edit

Hallo, Stunteltje, Category:Canal du Rhône à Sète bevat meerdere fotos van boten, kun je boot categories toevoegen of verfijnen? groeten, --Havang(nl) (talk) 19:43, 10 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

To me just (open) boats in France, except 1 image of motorboats in France and 1 of houseboats in France (a former barge.) I added the categories. Unfortunately I don't know if one of the following categories is applicable:

  • Boats in Bouches-du-Rhône (1 C)
  • Boats in Bretagne (3 C, 5 B)
  • Boats in Charente-Maritime (4 C, 20 B)
  • Boats in Normandy (3 C)
  • Boats in Var (1 C, 10 B)
  • Boats in Vendée (1 C)

--Stunteltje (talk) 20:08, 10 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Beaucaire is Gard, most others are Hérault. I'll add departement cat's. What is the relation between Category:boats in France and Category:Ships in France, could these be fused? --Havang(nl) (talk) 09:13, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
The size, as always the problem and in discussion. Most professional vessels are ships, except e.g. tugboats. Fishing vessels with holds are ships, without holds are boats (at least I categorise that way). You can put a boat on a ship, not a ship on a boat. Realise the difference between IN and OF. "Ships/boats in" a country can be "ships/boats of" another. What I do is coupling these categories in the Watercraft categories. --Stunteltje (talk) 10:55, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I started a tree Category:Boats in France by department. Aside Category:Ships of France, there is a loose Category:Ships in France just containing Category:Ships in Calvados. Should that cat be moved towards Category:Boats in Calvados or should all those boat cat's by department be renamed into Boats and ships? Can you have a look and correct Category:Boats in Finistère which I filled as exemple. Do you have suggestions for the other boat cat's by department. --Havang(nl) (talk) 13:24, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
To good weather in Sweet Lake City. Answer this evening, have to claen Stuntel (my scouting boat). --Stunteltje (talk) 14:16, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
For me is the fact that in Ships in France only 1 category exist no problem. In due time there will be more places or areas mentioned, I assume. I myself never put complete categories by names of ships in categories "ships in". Simple reason: the larger te category, the less chance that all images are form a certain place/area/country. I found a category already like: Category:xxxxxx (ship, xxxx) in xxxxxx in a category "ships in" and the name category of that ship. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:38, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'll restrict the categories boats in department to files, except for localised manifestations like Brest 2004. But nothing hurries, it has not my first interest. --Havang(nl) (talk) 19:44, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Lifeboat categories edit

Please see Category talk:Lifeboats. Thanks,Dankarl (talk) 16:48, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am not an native speaker of the English language, so I'll wait for other comments. But I think it is a good idea to clarify the situation. --Stunteltje (talk) 21:24, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

question edit

Thanks for taking the lead in getting all our ship images into useful categories. I want to follow your lead in this.

Could you please clarify, when we have multiple images that include a vessel, we should have a category, named after that vessel? And that category should be included in Category:IMO number xxxx, Category:Ships by name, and Category:Lake freighters, or some other vessel category? If I understand your system Category:IMO number xxxx should be included in just one category: Category:Ships by IMO number. Have I got that right?

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 19:29, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have fun in doing it and assume it is usefull. The answer is yes. The IMO category was intended to be a tool to group the images of a certain vessel, even when she was given more names. Finding more than one image with the same name of a certain ship was reason to create a category by shipname. However, I found out that one of our colleges uses the IMO number in the category Ships by shipyard. Category:Ships built at Wärtsilä Helsinki shipyard I think he is right. But the problem is, that not everybody knows of the IMO numbers and using shipnames is easier. So most of the times the Category:Ships by shipyard has multiple shipnames for the same ship, in stead of the single IMO number. These days people create categories by shipname even with a single image. Very usefull for ships with the same name. See e.g. Category:Berlin (ships). --Stunteltje (talk) 21:18, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I realised the problem when doing the categorisation. I thought I would need that shipyard category, but did not have time to do it other than the fastest possible way (the by IMO number categories usually mentioned the shipyard, so were easy to find). Now people have to click at the (unknown) IMO numbers at random to see what ships were made there, so it is not in any way ideal.
I thought about putting the IMO number categories in a separate category of the shipyard (and using the name otherwise), but was unsure about how to do it in a good way.
(I find making a category even for single ship is useful. There is a chance it gets used, so that you notice when other images get uploaded. You do not have to move the parent categories around when those other images are uploaded. And it removes clutter from the parent categories: with a few hundred images, you do not find those that need further categorisation.)
--LPfi (talk) 16:31, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think you are right in the conclusion that a category by shipname is usefull, even with a single image. My problem is, that I tink it is not the policy in general at Commons. But for all the old ships (e.g. in Australia) I make a category with a single image too, as I can add the ship details and history there. They don't have an IMO number category for that. --Stunteltje (talk) 20:51, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think it is policy for persons (but do not find it now). I think the same rationale (as I remember it: there might come more files) is applicable to ships. So I think there is no problem creating such categories, when one has the time to do it and t and find it worthwhile. I mostly do it only when I find two or more images of the same ship - or when I upload an image myself. --LPfi (talk) 10:09, 19 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
