Thanks for uploading Image:Premier1.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging
below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website whereyou got
it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrightedwork, you need to supply the names
and a licence of the original authors as well.

I am at a loss as to how I should handle the copyright issue described at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Wylie_Gustafson_in_concert%2C_Cody%2C_Wyoming%2C_April_2007.jpg

It states: "This media file does not have sufficient information on its copyright status. Unless the copyright status is provided, the image will be deleted seven days after this template was added."

This is my first attempt at uploading a photo to Wikipedia. I took the photo, yet am confused about what I'm missing. Thanks for any help you can provide. JLD

Hello Sz-iwbot!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 10:20, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

This should not be a delete (leave alone a speedy delete). There are 72 images in this gallery. The BOT needs to be fixed. Some rule(s) in the bot is not recognizing any of the 72 SVG files in this gallery. This Gallery is also referenced at ta:wikipedia:மேளகர்த்தா இராகங்கள். VasuVR (talk, contribs) 06:58, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Half of the galleries indicated empty are not empty at all. In general, I have to revert 60 to 90 % of the speedy deletions from the bot. If you think that the bot should carry on, I would insert them in a subcategory potential speedy deletion as they require all further investigation. --Foroa (talk) 08:13, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't know. As a software engineer, I think it should be a fixable problem.
What is the source of information for this bot? We need to find out the root of the problem. If we can fix that, then the bot can continue? If you think that it is difficult to find the root of problem and it is easier to make this kind of change to reduce manual effort, then please go ahead. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Don't tag gallery with media/files as "gallery with no media/files" edit

Hi!
On three new galleries that I made recently I found your Speedy-template. All three were already undone by an attentive user (thanks, user:J.smith), but the reason (Bot flag speedydelete tag: gallery with no media/files) is wrong: all three galleries had one file (.jpg). Maybe your bot doesn't recognize these jpg's.
The 3 files are:

Not a big problem, but making these galleries with all the right info takes some time. It should be nice if you could fix this bug. Thanks, maarten Sepp (talk) 08:48, 16 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content, Template:Speedydelete, was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Hi Iwbot! (or whoever is reading this)

Two months ago I asked you to keep your bot in control (16 december, same subject). After a blocking request the problem seemed to be solved, but now again: another case of a gallery that is NOT empty, but you (or your bot) consider it empty. Maybe a bug??

It is gallery Acineta barkeri, the del. request is already reverted, so no harm done, but this should be avoided. Please make the bot work better (it is useful if working properly) or block it.

Thanks for uploading File:Jayi-park-001.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Jayi-park-001.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Stop adding pointless code to File:Flag of the Republic of China-Nanjing (Peace, Anti-Communism, National Construction).svg edit

I have absolutely no intention whatsoever of visting "tineye", since nothing to be found there would have any effect on whether or not this image should be kept on Wikimedia Commons. AnonMoos (talk) 09:26, 9 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Limitations edit

The "tineye" bot marked a file File:Swine flu infection exponent by county June 2009.svg that I uploaded using a descendant of the Wikimedia commons U.S. county maps. It was able to find 46 images throughout the Web that include a map of the U.S. borders, with or without state lines. None of them had county lines, even though I began with such a map from Wikimedia commons, and U.S. maps with county lines have been published extensively by the Associated Press and New York Times for example in relation to unemployment in recent months.

Now your bot may or may not be picking up real copyright problems in some cases, but I think you need to recognize its limitations. I think your bot should search Wikimedia commons for matches first and abort further action if it finds a match to a file more than two or three years old or otherwise been certified, accepting that such files very likely do not have copyright issues. I also don't see the point of asking originators to edit their files to put a tag on the file saying "no, this really isn't a copyright violation" a few hours after they've just said the same thing for the upload. Isn't there some way for your bot to keep track of what it has already looked at (for instance, by processing files in sequential order of creation or major modification dates, or using a log file)? File:Rackham Puck.jpg and File:The-Widow-Whitgift-And-Her-Sons,-From-Puck-Of-Pook-Hill-By-Rudyard-Kipling-1867-1936-1906.jpg cannot be a copyright violation, because they are works by Arthur Rackham, a person who died 70 years ago. Far too aggressive in matching "similar" images edit

This bot is matching so-called "similar" images that are not nearly similar enough to even suggest copyright violation. For example, a map I produced, File:SAA international network map.svg, was matched against several other images simply because they were also world maps with the countries coloured grey. Also, several of those maps were other maps on Commons which is a bit ridiculous. I really don't appreciate spending several hours working to produce a map for Commons, only to have it immediately tagged with an offensive message accusing me of copyright violation! - Htonl (talk) 00:23, 8 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I concur. This image was tagged because there are thousands of images similar to it. Most of those are on the Commons.--Ibagli (talk) 21:57, 8 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

False positives edit

The bot reports false positives. Perhaps it should reserve the results in a log file or some page for human judges to confirm. It is not correct to operate a bot in alpha state on a real database. --Nevit Dilmen (talk) 23:37, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Blatant false positive problems edit

You should really check your bot because it's disrupting the Commons overall with it always placing the similar image tag, and not actually detecting any true copyright violations. Please, either fix it or stop it. It's not doing any good so far. GraYoshi2x (talk) 16:51, 5 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Similar images problems edit

  • The bot adds the template to images taken from the web (for example this image)

  • The bot produces way to much falls positives when run on old uploads, please only run it on recently uploaded files.

Hi, I noticed that you are moving files based on category redirects. How do you select the redirects? Do you do all of them? see http://svn.wikimedia.org/svnroot/pywikipedia/trunk/pywikipedia/category_redirect.py , I use the bot --shizhao (talk) 09:06, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Do you use this on all non-empty redirect categories or just some?
RussBot (log) would ignore, e.g. the redirect in Category:Preserved British narrow gauge steam locomotives (diff) as it was just set now and there seems to be some disagreement on whether this should redirect.
As the request seems to be controversial, it wouldn't have been dealt with by User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands either.
Can I count on you that you use it only selectively on banal redirects or make sure the waiting period is respected? BTW RussBot runs automatically after the waiting period. -- User:Docu at 12:19, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

These are US Government Images, of emblems of USAF Air National Guard units, with a link back to their source page on the US Government Website

Regards Bwmoll3 (talk) 03:39, 22 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Also, please tell your bot to remove the tags it put on the image page as well please ?

Again, please inform your bot that the following images, which it tagged and notified me of no source information, has it clearly shown.

File:161st Air Refueling Wing.png File:157th Air Refueling Wing.png

Please teach your bot to read pages before tagging them. Thank you :) Bwmoll3 (talk) 22:49, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please spot your bot edit

Hi,

you're bot has been replacing the category Category:Living people by the category Category:People by name even if the people are alive and even if the category Category:People by name was already present for the medias. Please stop your bot and fix this problem. Badzil (talk) 10:49, 13 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Exclusion compliance edit

Just curious, is this bot exclusion compliant? Kaldari (talk) 21:00, 9 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:N2O3.gif edit

File:N2O3.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi, as imho reported befored, please use useful categories and don't over-categorize the bot-transfers, i.e. please do not categorize your uploads (an example of the bot's recent activity):

Category:Science and technology in India +
Category:Computer scientists +
Category:Information technology in India +
Category:Uploaded with UploadWizard +
Category:People by name +

btw: en:Category:Indian computer scientists has already been 'tagged' by a commons category:

Category:Computer scientists from India

so imho the most 'fitting' category is given :-((

Thank you for your assistance, Roland 19:17, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

Categorisation edit

As a general rule, all disambiguation, redirect and meta cats should not be used for images, especially Category:people by name that you keep filling up. --Foroa (talk) 20:33, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Any chance of waiting a minute or two before issuing notices? edit

This was a little quick. Any chance of waiting a couple of minutes before checking new uploads? --99of9 (talk) 20:39, 31 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:烏孫昆彌世系表.JPG. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:A小調.png, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:A小調.png]]).

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!
