First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello, please don't do this kind of edit again, thanks, Patrícia msg 17:18, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Why are you placing {{Indefblockeduser}} on pages of people who are not blocked? Also, you have to create an account to actually say that is a doppelgänger of yours, it's not enough to just place the template on a (previously inexistent) userpage.
If you're having problems in understanding how to edit a wiki, please just ask me any doubts you have, ok? Cheers, Patrícia msg 08:56, 22 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for providing images to the Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best use CommonsHelper
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Bear in mind that once you have uploaded material to Commons it ceases to be yours (if licensed correctly & if not it will be deleted). It is material to be used anywhere by anyone and as such must be able to be found. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:30, 23 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Warning edit

Please consider this a last warning, do not create user pages that aren't yours or don't exist, that is vandalism. I have requested you before to not do so, and you have repeated your actions. You will be blocked if you persist in doing such edits. Patrícia msg 15:06, 25 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Creating doppelganger accounts isn't mindless vandalism, it protects me from vandals, which I am not.
Say if a IP Address said to me 'You stink!!!!!!! I am gonna block you. Revert all your edits. Report you.' Thats not following the WikiLove guidelines.
  • Will you create them again?

- Tharnton345 07:28, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

You were not creating any accounts, you were merely creating pages which does not "protect" you. IPs cannot block you & there are plenty of admins around to deal with vandalism. This is not the same as Wikipedia.
If you cannot contribute to the project constructively you may well be indefinitely blocked --Herby talk thyme 07:34, 27 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, the tab that says gallery at the top of my page. Tharnton345 18:51, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK - again I have to point out to you that once you have uploaded any files to Commons they are no longer "yours" and anyone can edit them to add description, category or whatever. That is what happens to every ones uploads. You have freely licensed them for anyone to use. If that does not suit you then please do not upload any more files --Herby talk thyme 19:11, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Its OK for them to use it. Tharnton345 06:40, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

RfA edit

I've deleted it. Most of your contributions are in your own namespace & you fall seriously short of the requirement for adminship. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:10, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

A final warning I think edit

Your editing really is very disruptive & irritating. I have just deleted a page you created in another user's namespace. I fail to see any reason for doing this. If you edit in this fashion again you can expect to be blocked. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 17:23, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please do not be ridiculous. You have nowhere near the required edits to be eligible to stand as an admin. --Herby talk thyme 18:05, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Why Not? Tharnton345 18:06, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is a minimum edit requirement for admins. You have virtually no edits other than in your userspace. Equally such editing as you are doing is scarcely useful. You have been blocked once - it would be better not to be blocked again please --Herby talk thyme 18:40, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Given the edits you have made I'll assume you are merely trying to be irritating. There are no policies covering grammar & the like here (or on any wiki as far as I am aware). Certainly talk page editing is fairly casual. I will remind you of the heading of this section I think --Herby talk thyme 09:41, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Again you seem to think that you can ignore Commons policies and practices. Now you are removing valid closures of Featured picture candidates as "Removing vandalism". That is not how to work with others, it is wrong to remove valid closures (& wrong to decide to close others yourself).

As far as I am concerned this is your final block. If you fail to work with others & ignore policies & practices I think that your next block should be an indefinite one. In passing I noticed you have again made your signature quite unlike your user name, something I pointed out to you above & you corrected. --Herby talk thyme 17:10, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Am I a vandal? Tharnton345 08:16, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, you are doing what we may classify as trolling. Patrícia msg 08:06, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Why aren't I aloud to create bots? Tharnton345 (talk) 17:50, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
No one would consider you as a bot operator given your contributions so far. They are frequently close to vandalism, certainly could be considered trolling and rarely respect our policies & practices. --Herby talk thyme 18:54, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Given that I explicitly pointed out to you above that reverted a valid closure of a featured picture as "rv vandalism" was wrong I have to conclude that you do not care in the slightest about Commons, its users & its policies. A number of editors have raised concerns before & I did point out to you that the next block would be an indefinite one.

File:Wikipedia page.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution.
