Hungarian names

Hungarian names invariably use the "Eastern name order", or family name followed by given name, except in foreign language text. Hungary is the only European and Western country to do so. As if in Philippines there is another settlement named Ternate. In Italy there is also some comune Ternate. Furthermore, we should differentiate the city and the island with the same name. So the scope should be Ternate City, Indonesia or Ternate Island, Indonesia depending on your target - the city or the island.--MrPanyGoff 06:44, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Greek police

Thanks for review and for message.

I understand what you mean, even if I disagree a bit but no matter.

As I'm no more on Symi island (very near from Turkey in the Aegean sea) now, but in Paris (France), it should be difficult to try another shot !

But I'm careful enough: I've tooken those days another picture with only the logo, alone !!

I did'nt upload it yet on "Commons", because I've to learn about copyright in Greece.

If you'll take a close-up look on the hair, you'll see it is too bright. Also, parts of the face are too bright as well and have a somewhat unnatural color (like the ears or the nose). --Tomer T (talk) 11:47, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

  • "Ha" is "the" in Hebrew. I don't think there is any formal decision of how to write it in English. The first part of the name (Beth/Beit) can be written either way I think, but "Beit" is more accurate. And actually, you made a good point, because the name of the category here in Commons (with which I spelled the scope) is wrong, as well as the English article and I think also the German one (I'm not really sure about the German pronunciation). I'm quite amazed at these accusations. I don't see myself as a notable figure here at commons. Besides FP, which I'm dealing with also in Hebrew and English Wikipedia, I don't do much here. I know only one user personally, with which I spoke for a minute or so in Wikimania. The usernames of the active users at FPC are familiar to me, but I don't yet stand on the differences between them, and certainly don't know what you're talking about when mentioning any "cliques". I judge every picture discussed based only on the criteria, and based on aesthetic and encyclopedic aspects.

You asked me to give a more extensive & detailed review, and I did. I think I delivered it quite clearly, and made my point. After a review as extensive as I gave, I don't expect anyone to doubt my movites. You can disagree with me, and tell me why you don't accept my arguments, but it's a long way from that to just accuse me of being a part of a "clique" and attribute my motives to that.

About what you said - as you probably know, beauty and impressiveness are not absolute. They depend on the viewer's perspective. You should have realized that yourself and attribute our disagreements to that, and shouldn't have attributed it to mysterious "cliques" motives. Also, I don't know what you're talking about when you just say, out of the blue, that you "had already much more impressive church pics to candidate".

Thank you for your consulting, I feel very proud you ask me such a question, as I'm not a so good photographer...

Sorry to be a bit late.

My opinion about this picture is that it has no chance. The subject is good and impressive, but the technical quality is really far under the bar of usual FP promoted pictures IMO. There are many pixellisations, color noise (the kepi), and the left part of the jacket is really bad and blurry. The DoF is not very good (the eye is not in focus)...

Well, I think it is not a good candidate.

But it is only my poor opinion...

Cropping of images

Example

Please consider not to worse compression parameters when you crop images. For example File:Gulls on Morro Strand State Beach.jpg the version cropped by you shows significant more compression artifacts than the original. Please be more careful in future, thanks. -- smial (talk) 14:54, 19 April 2012 (UTC) Same problem in File:Kids, Namibe, Angola cropped.jpg which has strong colour artifacts now, which do not appear in the original upload!

That's two featured pictures you're talking about, so I guess the compression isn't that bad. Actually, I can't notice any further artefacts, but I believe you they exist.

In most of my editing, and in all of the simple editing jobs, I use a "primitive" editor software: Windows Live Photo Gallery. I don't know how to set compression paramteres or overcome this technical obstacle. Tomer T (talk) 16:42, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Tomer, I see that the confirmed result of the featured picture voting for Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Steinway & Sons upright piano, model K-52 (mahogany finish), manufactured at Steinway's factory in New York City.jpg was "not featured". 2 supported the featured picture nomination and just 1 opposed. I don't know what do you mean by old images. If do you mean there are any FPs (featured pictures) less than 2 MPX that were voted to FP in 2005 or 2006, that's because that rule wasn't a rule then. You can try to nominate the image above, my personal opinion is that it's not impressive enough (FPs are the best commons have, and compare it to other FPs of flowers), but that's only my opinion - and maybe others will think otherwise. Local privacy laws

Hi, do you know what the local laws are concerning consent? In most countries consent is not required if a photo is taken in a public place with no expectation of privacy. I have emailed my embassy in Tel Aviv but you may know already. I don't have the ability to move files. Only file movers can do it. You can add Template:Rename to the page (the instructions how to add it are on Template:Rename page). About location: see Template:Location (You should find the coordinates and insert them through that template; usually they are recorded on the camera and uploaded automatically). For many centuries, spinning plant fibers into yarn/thread was the stereotypical women's work and often a sort of symbol of femininity. However, beginning in the late eighteenth century, and ever more so as the nineteenth century wore on, it was heavily mechanized in British factories (first by water-power, then by steam-power). By the late nineteenth century, machine weaving had driven out almost all hand-weaving, so how could hand-spinning be cost-effective in a territory right next to, and commercially exposed to, British industries? In his Memoir of Jane Austen, Jane Austen's nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh (born 1798) explains the spinning situation, and says that he can "only just remember some of its last struggles for existence in the Steventon cottages" (in the early 19th century).
