Comments on Svitzer Glenrock tug QI candidate edit

Hello VileGecko:

Typically, we do not usually get into lengthy discussions on the QI voting page so I am sending you a separate communication on your Svitzer Glenrock image. I apologize if my points are obvious and you are aware of these issues already.

Ship pictures are about presenting the ship in the best possible way - it's all about the ship. Your image can make a QI rating but will need some further changes.

Svitzer Glenrock in Newcastle, 20.02.2021

Always bring your best quality if you want a QI rating. Your Canon EOS 250D camera has a 22.3 × 14.9 mm sensor (APS-C format) with a maximum resolution of 6000 x 4000 pixels (24.1-megapixel file size). There is no reason to make images at less than the maximum possible resolution, nor reduce the resolution to enhance perceived sharpness. The only case for less than the maximum resolution would be for better display of the ship by cropping of the original image in the best way. Version 1 of your image was 6.56 MB and cropped to some degree. In the current version 2, you cropped less but the image file size reduced to 1.27 MB, below the minimum 2 MB limit for QI images mentioned by User:Nightflyer (see COM:QIC). Whether you realize it or not, your editing program is reducing the resolution of your image in saving to a file. Your image will not get a QI rating at less than 2 MB. I would recommend it be as high as originally imaged in your camera for best quality.

On my personal two items, I can see why your version 1 was cropped tight at the top to avoid all the other ship and buoy clutter in the background. Not a QI problem but more of a personal preference, I would suggest going back to your original cropping in version 1 as it was the best display of the tug.

Your tone rendition in version 2 is a definite improvement but the black paint of the hull could still show a little more detail. I would play with the black tone level and raise it just a little more. I personally wonder if your original was underexposed a little.

Best regards, Gordon --GRDN711 (talk) 19:26, 15 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello, @GRDN711: , thank your for your feedback!
The previous version was indeed overcompressed - export quality settings have been reduced for some unknown reason. I've raised exposure of blacks and shadown and returned to the first frame crop - I hope this iteration hits the mark. -- VileGecko (talk) 08:13, 16 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Almost clipping the antenna at the top - is there any more space at the top of the image? Also, consider doing some tonal tuning - overall a little dark, especially in shadows. --GRDN711 20:44, 10 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done Recropped the photo so that there's more space above the mainmast and raised the blacks and shadows. --VileGecko 20:15, 13 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
