Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File:South Talpatti Island.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Bikini images? edit

Do you think you can stop uploading free bikini images for a while (maybe 5 days)? The flickr review bot has crashed--it marks only 1-2 images at each interval--and the flickr backlog is 240+ images And your mass uploads aren't helping matters. You can always upload them later once the flickr bot has been fixed. Right now, the bot is malfunctioning and I cannot mark all these images since I have my own job to do and I have other people's images to mark too. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 09:02, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

 • What I meant is that the bikini images take up a lot of time for me to mark...and no one helps me. I mark some of your photos. But of course, I have to mark other people's images too (to be fair). I know you cannot mark your uploaded images. Its not the tone. Its the bad timing....right now. Most time the flickr bot would just pass them with no difficulty at all since you upload the maximum resolution. Thank You for marking some of the backlog. It helps a little. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:11, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
 • Yes, it is good news that the bot works. Then all we can do is just to sit back and let it work its magic. Thanks for marking some of the images. For 3 days, no one helped here. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 18:30, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
 • Sure. No problem. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:51, 25 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Ashley Roberts2.jpg edit

You accidentally passed a copyvio here. Did you see that the flickr account has only 1 image. Surely this is a great warning sign that the uploader took the image from somewhere. It could be here though the resolution is smaller. (not 2043 X 3000 pixels) Since one cannot be sure, Trycatch, feels its safer to tag it with npd on the file history. I admit, this is a great way to slip a flickwash pass trusted users like us. That is why I look at the flickr account and see the flickr photostream if possible. Files you uploaded may be deleted edit

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have not sent the permission, please send it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. If you have, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard, quoting the file name, so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Wikitanvir, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Using images from Flicker edit

I would be very grateful for your help.

I recently downloaded some images onto Wikicommons. One was from Flicker- a view of a font in Llandaff Cathedral.

I want to use this in an article written for Wikipedia on the sculptor Alan Durst so asked the author of the image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/9056557@N08/5382044136/) whether he would give me permission to use the image. He agreed and kindly went backi to Llandaff to take more photographs for me to use.

It looks as though I have not followed the right track and that my image could be removed.

I would be most grateful if you could give me some guidance, perhaps a step by step guide to downloading Images from Flicker to Wikicommons, where I have the author's approval, and want to then include in a Wikipedia article.

Many thanks

Civil edit

I'm no longer going to upload here. I will upload all my images to wikipedia instead.I spent time requesting the license was changed on those images and uploaded them here in good faith. Then I get a PAY ATTENTION TO COPYRIGHT warning which is patronising givnen that I had requested the bunch and it was a slight error that the flickr user missed that particular image. Issuing civil wanrings made it even worse and pushed me away. Blofeld Dr. (talk) 16:43, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thankyou, I will try to remain civil but I find that warning very patronising. Given that I am very conscious of it and even make requests every day or two for people to change licenses I find it a bit off that's all... When I am angry, civil warnings make the situation worse, even if the comments are indeed uncivil. Never mind. Sorry for the conflict, Take care.Blofeld Dr. (talk) 17:25, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please do not tag images with OTRS pending or OTRS received for speedy deletion edit

Thank you for helping by reviewing flicker images on the commons. If you find a file does not have the correct permissions and has an OTRS pending or OTRS received tag, please tag it with YourUsername rather than Unfree Flickr file. If you have any questions about this feel free to ask on my talk page, MorganKevinJ(talk) 05:09, 10 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have no question. Thanks for pointing that out. Actually, it's ZooFari's script. When I marked that as failed, the script automatically added the speedy deletion template. I will keep that in mind next time, cheerio! — [ Tanvir | Talk ] 09:53, 10 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

File:Mike Halsey.jpg edit

Hi Wikitanvir, for the evaluation of the ticket for File:Mike Halsey.jpg it might be of concern that the name of the author/photographer initially was given as "Sean Clark, UnderWaterImage.co.uk" and changed by the uploader to "Mike Halsey" only after I requested to provide a permission from Sean Clark". --Túrelio (talk) 08:26, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

OTRS for images edit

You have received permission e-mail for my images

and some other files The permission is totally true. If you want to check it, please contact the author because I asked her in FlickrMail, not in the source page. As you can see in the email the author say just require to attribute me as as the author . So understand it's cc-by. Moreover, some of her images are also on Commons before like

They are also licensed under cc-by. So if you don't believe, you can ask Chrisa hickey by creating an account and send her email. Thank you very much--Hoangquan hientrang (talk) 10:26, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

File:Bharat Mata Abanindranath.jpg edit

Pay attention to copyright
File:Bharat Mata Abanindranath.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. I can protect, but a question. These logos are based on old Wikipedia logos, can you please create the logos based on the new logo (as you did for Pali Wikipedia)? Of course it is a community decision, I am just letting you know. Since most of the Wikipedia are using the new logo. If you still want to use these logos please inform me, I will protect them. See this bug https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27661. I do not understand why a new bug (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28969) is logged to update the Sanskrit logo update there are no issues with the current logo. If there are issues, first discuss the issue in community. --Shijualex (talk) 01:28, 17 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, that's my opinion too. But I am not the one who changes the logo. Vibhijain just asked me to protect the logo, because he said above, the logo is gonna be used on sawiki. Bugzilla will always ask for community consensus. And the proposed logo is not proper yet. So, most probably they won't grant it. — Tanvir | Talk ] 04:35, 17 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dear Admin Wikitanvir,

If you have some time, please consider marking some of these images here. I don't know why Commons has many trusted users and Admins and only a few like Chaser, Lymantria, occasionally MGA73 or me, mark them sporadically nowadays. If you can mark a few, it would help. I mark some but I have my own job too. But....please mark them only if you have the time. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:12, 31 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

The user declared himself the copyright holder of the image, but I think he might be lying, like in previous cases. File:Young_girl_with_see-through_tops_and_shorts.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Xabi1980 edit

I can't find the message User:Xabi1980 supposedly left you that caused you to remove the copyvios from the Panoramio files that were uploaded by them. We need a definitive link and not a say-so, like the Panoramio user leaving a message on their pages that they are Xabi1980 or an OTRS email with the email address for the Panoramio user shown in their profile. – Adrignola talk 23:33, 16 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'll go straight to the main issue. Why did you remove the copyright violation templates from his uploads? [1], [2], etc. The Panoramio files they uploaded here are marked all rights reserved at Panoramio and were not license reviewed as being under an acceptable license. – Adrignola talk 04:26, 20 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Copyright law of Bangladesh edit

I need some help from a native speaker of the bengali language. In recent weeks, I created a lot of copyright templates on Commons. We already have Template:PD-Bangladesh, but this template (and its source) do not explain if governmental documents like laws and court decision are public domain in general (which is the case in most countries). Can you have a look into the bengali law (you find it here [3] and check if this is the case? (the section about the copyright status is usually one of the first ones)--Antemister (talk) 11:51, 14 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Help edit

Hi Tanvir,

I am from the Tamil Wiki projects. We are planning to run a media contest for Tamil wiki projects and use the Upload campaign for it. We need help from an administrator to set up the campaign. (we tried to get the new user right for doing this alone and has stalled because, commons doesn't have any policies in place to govern this. We were adviced to seek the help of an admin instead. (administrators have the rights to setup and manage campaigns).

Can you help me create and configure the upload campaign. We require help only for the initial setup and dont need it afterward (we can use the categories for tracking). I have created the necessary templates and categories for the contest. I will provide the campaign details if you are ok with helping us.--Sodabottle (talk) 13:28, 25 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Surely, I can help, poke me on IRC or e-mail me in details. IRC would be good. :) — Tanvir | Talk ] 14:35, 26 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Tanvir. Our resident tech wizard logicwiki will be poking you in IRC with the details :-). --Sodabottle (talk) 14:40, 26 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for setting up the wizard Tanvir. It is perfect except for a small thing. In the last step before publish (where we add file descriptions) there is a mandatory field which isn't present in the normal upload wizard. We thinke it is the ID field wikitext. Can you check and please remove it. (adding anything in it doesnt showup in the file page - so we believe it isnt required at all)--Sodabottle (talk) 16:08, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
And one more help - we dont want the tutorial to be displayed as the first page - the one that appears under the "learn" tab in the upload wizard. I believe it can be removed by leaving the "name of the tutorial on wikimedia commons. $1 is replaced by the language code" entry blank in the setup process. Thanks!.--Sodabottle (talk) 10:26, 2 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I removed the $1 from ID, so it should not ask for ID now. And you sure you want to remove the tutorial? That is helpful nonetheless, and each user can disable that by their own by checking the "Skip this step in the future" check box. I can remove that anyway. Just want to tell you that is not very useful, and to be extra sure. Sorry for the late, have been busy these days. — Tanvir | Talk ] 03:33, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Tanvir, But the field is still appearing as mandatory. I think it is not enough to remove just the $1 but entirely blank that field ("ID field wikitext.... Blank to not display field") to remove it.
And regarding the tutorial. Yes we want to remove it because it talks about files other than "own work" and we have decided not to allow non "own work" images. If the uploaders land up at the tutorial page and see it talking about other types of files, they might upload them as part of the contest. So yes please remove it too.--Sodabottle (talk) 05:04, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
