West Edinburgh Busway

English: The West Edinburgh Busway, also known as Edinburgh Fastlink, was a 1.5km long section of guided busway installed in the western suburbs of Edinburgh, Scotland. It opened in December 2004 as part of the West Edinburgh Bus Scheme (WEBS). The busway ran in an E-W direction, sandwiched between parallel local roads along its south side (Bankhead Drive, Broomhouse Drive and Stenhouse Drive) and a mainline railway to the north. The busway featured four stops, and crossed local roads in two places using newly built bridges. These were arranged as follows (from west to east):
  • Broomhouse West Halt
  • Broomhouse Road (B701) bridge
  • Broomhouse East Halt
  • Saughton West Halt
  • Saughton Road bridge
  • Saughton East Halt
The busway was used exclusively by Lothian Buses (routes 2 & 22), fitting guidewheels to some of their buses. It was built with a future tram network in mind, and accordingly in January 2009 buses stopped using it in preparation for its conversion for use by Edinburgh Trams. The new tram line, which opened in May 2014, utilises the full route of the former busway, replacing the four bus stops with a single tram stop - Saughton tram stop, with Bankhead tram stop a short distance west of the western end.
