Wild Flowers of New York (1918)

Fig. 1. View of cage used to protect wild flowers from wind while photographing

Plates from State Museum (John M. Clarke Director) Memoir 15, Wild Flowers of New York, in Two Parts, by Homer D. House, State Botanist, published in Albany by The University of the State of New York in 1918. They were released in Volumes 2 and 3 of the New York State Museum 72nd Annual Report 1918, which was published in Albany by The University of the State of New York, in 1920.

In the following table, page numbers refer to the page on which the plant species in the plate or figure was described in the book. The color plates were not given page numbers but were inserted near the page(s) containing the description, although not necessarily in the same order as the descriptions, especially in cases were there are two photographs on a plate. For convenience, the table has been broken up by families or groups of families as assigned in the 1918 book (following Britton and Brown, 2nd ed.). These do not necessarily correspond to currently accepted family names or family memberships.

Because Rhododendron canescens (syn. Azalea canescens) is not known to have naturalized in New York, and assuming that this photograph was taken of a wild azalia within the state, it is probable that A. canescens is an incorrect identification of this plant. It is more likely to be the similar species R. periclymenoides.
