Category:1994 Corporate Plaza Collapse, Allentown, Pennsylvania

The seven story modern office building known as Corporate Plaza was built in downtown Allentown in 1986. It was located just north of Center Square on North 7th Street. Many local residents regarded it as a landmark achievement in Allentown's downtown revitalization efforts.

The building was badly damaged by sinkholes on February 23, 1994. It was necessary to implode the structrue. Several other buildings on North 7th street were also affected and needed to be demolished. The Corporate Plaza building was successfully imploded on March 19, 1994, 3 1/2 weeks after the catastrophe had begun. After the implosion, the land was cleared and for many years afterwards it was simply a large empty lot.

In 2011, engineers stablized the land to restore it to a buildable state. Today the location is the location of the PPL Center arena and Renissance Hotel.
