The Adam and Mary Smith House, designed by the prominent Madison architects August Kutzbock and Samuel H. Donnel, was originally located on Highway 151 between Madison and Sun Prairie. When the house was to be demolished to create a frontage road for the highway in the mid-1990s, historic preservationists included it in the Madison Trust's 10 Most Endangered Buildings annual program. As a result, it was moved to become the centerpiece of a development located within view of the old site.

Adam Smith was one of the 36 men who arrived on horse or who walked to the future site of Madison to build the Wisconsin Territorial capitol building in 1836.
