The fossil bones of the Armley Hippo, also known as the Leeds Hippopotamus, were discovered in 1851 (among other hippo bones) by brickfield workmen in Wortley, Armley, Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The bones are now displayed in Leeds City Museum, on a mount created by taxidermist James Dickinson. It is an example of the subspecies known as the great northern hippopotamus, or Hippopotamus amphibius, which has long been extinct in the UK.
