The Astor Theater at 1721 Hanover Avenue was the only cinema built in East Allentown. It opened February 4, 1929 with William Haines in “Excess Baggage”.

Owned by John D. Ruff. It was described as being directly opposite the entrance of the Allentown State Hospital. It had a seating capacity of 725 seats. Along with the theater were two stores along with several apartments. It was originally a silent film theater, equipped with a Page Theater organ that cost $10,000. In 1931, the theater closed briefly for the addition of a Vitaphone sound capability, and afterwards it became part of the Warner Brothers distribution chain. The Astor operated primarily during the 1930s, it being owned and sold on several occasions. By 1941, it was known as the New Astor Theater. and in 1942 it began to offer Vaudeville shows several nights a week. The theater closed for good in 1943 when its owner, Al Moffa, was drafted into the Army during World War II. The theater was subsequently placed for sale in 1944.

The theater was vacant until November 1945 when it was purchased by Frank and Stella Kush, who remodeled, and turned into the New Astor Seafood Restraunt and nightclub. That closed in 1954, and it was purchased by the The Loyal Order of Moose, becoming their meeting and social facility. The Moose sold the property in 1972.

Over the years since it was used as a second floor apartment building and the first floor as a social facility, as well as the Astor Bingo Hall.
