English: In the early 19th century, some window panes used in houses on Beacon Hill, Boston, contained more manganese oxide than intended. This caused them to turn purple after exposure to sunlight (solarization) much more quickly than usual. Initially unwanted, the purple glass was later prized; several buildings still have original purple panes.
