English: Discovered east of the Temple of Zeus, this statue base proclaims Η ΠΟΛΙΣ Η ΜΕΣΣΗΝΙΩΝ ΙΟΥΛΙΟΝ ΑΘΗΝΑΙΟΝ ΙΟΥΛΙΟΥ ΝΕΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΑΝΟΥ ΥΙΟΝ ΣΤΕΦΑΝΩΣΑΣΑ ΤΩ ΤΗΣ ΑΡΙΣΤΟΠΟΛΕΙΤΕΙΑΣ ΣΤΕΦΑΝΩ, "The polis of Messene has awarded Julius Athenaius son of Julius Neopolitanus the best-government wreath." This must have been a competitive award but the circumstances and criteria remain obscure. The names are Roman. This type of award was common in non-Olympic contexts in the Peloponnesus; therefore, one presumes a Peloponnesian Messene.
