The United States Army's annual Best Ranger Competition, held at Fort Benning, Georgia, originally was open only to qualified U.S. Army rangers. In 1987 it was made Army-wide, including the Army National Guard, with the expectation that only ranger-qualified persons could apply, and the anticipation that preliminary competitions would be held to select the best candidates.
