Category:Birds' Head Haggadah

English: The Birds' Head Haggadah is the oldest illustrated Haggadah text, dated to circa 1300. It was created in southern Germany by Menahem. Parchment with pen and ink, tempera. It is handwritten with 47 leaves and measures 27 x 19 cm. It depicts Jewish people with birds' heads in order to avoid transgressing the Biblical prohibition of making graven images, as interpreted in the rabbinical tradition. This is a feature that was employed in other medieval Jewish sources, too.
