Category:Canals Hene-Scheldt

Between the rivers Scheldt en Hene are a coupple of canals because the region, the Borinage, was an important industrial region cause of its maney coal mines. At first, Napoleon ordered to dig a canal between Mons and Condé (France). Later, the Belgian dug a canal from Pommeroeul to Antoing-lez-Péronnes, to make the whole canal lying on Belgian territory.

The Canal du Centre joined Mons to the Canal Brussels-Charleroi. Because of its major levels, there where four boat lifts on this canal. When the Canal du Centre was modernised in the 1980's, they have been replaced by one single boat lift at Strépy-Thieu, on a new part of the Canal du Centre.
