Castle of Saint Pée sur NivelleEdit

The Saint Pee sur Nivelle castle remains in the local history to have hosted the plenipotentiary commission delegated by Henry IV at the request of Jean De Cauperne d'Amou, lord of Saint Pee, and Tristan Uthurbi, lord of Urrugne, to investigate on rumors of witchcraft. Make up by Jean d'Espagnet, president of the Bordeaux Parliament, and the Judge Pierre De Lancre, she tried in fact

  • to terminate the administration of the city by a Biltzar, assembly from which was excluded the Nobility and the Clergy,
  • reduce important role of women because of the long absence of the men left for the fishing in Terre-Neuve,
  • to end the monopoly of Basques in the furs' trade with Indian, that Henry IV wished to refer to one of his confidants.

Happened during the period of fishing, the knight De Lancre gave himself up to real abuses by sending to the stake from 50 to 100 women, before the Bishop of Bayonne, Bernard Echaut, and the fisherman returning from Terre-Neuve , will oblige the judge to return to Bordeaux.

This building is inscrit au titre des Monuments Historiques. It is indexed in the Base Mérimée, a database of architectural heritage maintained by the French Ministry of Culture, under the reference PA00084514 Wikidata-logo.svg.
