Category:Chinese Telephone Exchange

The Chinese Telephone Exchange was rebuilt following the 1906 earthquake, and remained in operation until 1949. Telephone operators memorized each subscriber's name, address, and occupation, as it was felt to be rude to refer to a person by a number and to distinguish between people with the same name. The building was purchased and restored by the Bank of Canton in 1960. It is at 743 Washington Street, just east of the intersection of Washington and Grant.
