w:Thomas de Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk (1366-1399) was the second son of John de Mowbray, 4th Baron Mowbray, and Elizabeth de Segrave, suo jure Baroness Segrave, daughter and heiress of John de Segrave, 4th Baron Segrave, by Margaret, Duchess of Norfolk, daughter and heiress of Thomas of Brotherton, 1st Earl of Norfolk, 5th son of King Edward I. His augmented arms were granted by King Richard II, who himself first adopted for his own royal arms the device of impalement by the attributed arms of King and Saint Edward the Confessor, denoting a mystical union
