Construction of the Colman Building began in 1889 by major Seattle figure James M. Colman. Originally envisioned by architect Stephen J. Meany as a gleaming white 5-story edifice crowned with towers and spires, construction was halted with only two floors built, due in part to the excessive amount of new office space being built in the wake of the Great Seattle Fire. Colman finally resumed construction in 1904, with a new set of plans by August Tidemand (who in the interim had designed the Colman Annex filling the other half of the block) reflecting a more simple Chicago School design. Colman retained as much of the previous building's structure as possible and the cast iron columns and archway seen on the building today are surviving relics of Meany's original design. When completed in 1906, it was Seattle's largest office building. Colman would pass away shortly after its completion. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, ID #72001272
