The Commodore 1600 modem cartridge, also known as the “VICMODEM”, was Commodore’s very first data modem and was sold from 1982. It supported 300 baud (bits per second) or 0.3 kBit per second via duplex connections and was connectable to an existing telephone’s handset connector instead of the phone line - expressed differently, it electrically and practically replaced the regular phone handset. This kept the price down, but required the user to dial manually through the phone's dialpad (Source).
