English: Cosmatesque style is a style of geometric floor- mosaic typical of Medieval Italy, and especially of Rome and its surroundings. The name derives from the Cosmati, the leading family workshop of marble craftsmen in Rome who created such geometrical decorations. The style spead across Europe, where it was used in the most prestigious churches; the high altar of Westminster Abbey, for example, is decorated with a cosmatesque marble floor.

También es conocido por algunos eruditos postmedievales como opus alexandrinum.

Italiano: Lo stile cosmatesco è un'ornamentazione caratteristica dei marmorari romani in età romanica, consistente nell'abbellire pavimenti, cibori e chiostri mediante tarsìe marmoree cromatiche di forme svariate e fantasiose, non funzionali all'architettura ma solo ornamentali. Nel secolo scorso questa decorazione fu chiamata cosmatesca perché usata dalla famiglia dei Cosmati, così detti dal loro capostipite Cosma. Il termine però appare impreciso in quanto tale tecnica trovava uso anche presso altri marmorari, riuniti in famiglie, come nei Vassalletto, o presso artigiani singoli.

Слово «косматеско» походить від прізвища родини мраморника Косматі , представники яких працювали в Римі та його околицях у XII і XIII століттях. Майстри використовували класичний стиль в поєднанні з візантійськими і ранньохристиянськими традиціями. Пізніше інші сім'ї каменотесів Італії перейняли традицію Косматі.
