The first C-117 versions (C-117A, C-117B, C-117C) were C-47s modified by the U.S. Air Force to serve as staff and VIP transports with an airline-style interior. The final C-117 version, the C-117D, was the 1962 redesignation of the R4D-8, the U.S. Navy's version of the Super DC-3, 98 examples of which the Navy ordered in 1951. These were modernized with new outer wing panels, a longer fuselage and tail unit, engine nacelles that fully enclosed the undercarriage, and more powerful Wright R-1820-80 Cyclone engines. The C-117Ds were operational with the U.S. Navy and Marines until the early 1990s.
