Gokliz was an Apache man from San Carlos or White Mountain. During the early 1880's, he lived with his wife (a daughter of Cochise) on the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona.

In 1886 he was imprisoned with the Chiricahua Apaches at Fort Marion in Saint Augustine, Florida, and remained with the Chiricahua prisoners for the rest of his life. From 1888 to 1894 Gokliz was at Mount Vernon, Alabama, and he enlisted in the U.S. army in 1891, moving to Fort Sill, Okla, in 1894
