Located in the Piazza San Rufino is a wall fountain with a rectangular basin made of travertine. It has eight sections with six lion headed spouts. This is not the fountain, which from about 1035 used to occupy a central position in the Cathedral square. This is the “Fountain of the Six Lions”, which was in Piazza San Francesco. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it was moved here. On the right-hand side of the fountain there is a bas-relief bearing the most ancient known representation of the town coat of arms with a rampant lion.
