English: The Fortezza citadel of Rethymno was built by the Venetians in the 1570s, starting on 13 September 1573. Conquered by the Ottomans in 1646, it remained in use until the early 20th century. During Ottoman times, most of the space inside the fortress was settled, and the last houses were demolished only in the 1960s. Large-scale restoration work is under way since the early 1990s.

Ελληνικά: Το φρούριο της ακρόπολης ("Φορτέτζα") του Ρεθύμνου. Κατασκευάστηκε από τους Βενετούς, με τη θεμελίωση στις 13 Σεπτεμβρίου 1573. Κατακτήθηκε από τους Οθωμανούς το 1646 και παρέμεινε σε χρήση ως στρατιωτική εγκατάσταση μέχρι τις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα. Ο οικισμός που αναπτύχθηκε εντός του φρουρίου δεν κατεδαφίστηκε παρά τη δεκαετία του 1960, όταν ξεκίνησαν και οι προσπάθειες αποκατάστασής του, που εντατικοποιήθηκαν τη δεκαετία του 1990.

Français : La Fortezza est la forteresse construite à Rethymnon par les Vénitiens dans les années 1570. Conquise par les Ottomans en 1646, elle reste en usage jusqu'au début du XXe siècle. Pendant la période ottomane, la plus grande partie de la citadelle est convertie en habitat ; les dernières maisons ne sont détruites qu'au début des années 1960. D'importants travaux de restauration ont été entrepris depuis le début des années 1990.
