Category:Galleria Giustiniana del Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani II

English: Galleria Giustiniana del Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani II is a 17th-century series of engravings showing ancient Roman sculptures in the Giustiniani collection.
The Rijksmuseum’s image descriptions regularly include a line like this:
Serienummer: 80/169

These numbers are referred to in more recent archaeological literature such as the large, unsuperseded catalogue by Friedrich Matz (1843-1874) and Friedrich Karl von Duhn (1851-1930), which is conveniently available in good-quality pdf files:

Friedrich Matz, Friedrich von Duhn: Antike Bildwerke in Rom mit Ausschluß der größeren Sammlungen, beschrieben von Friedrich Matz. Nach des Verfassers Tode weitergeführt und herausgegeben von F. von Duhn. 3 volumes. Verlag von Karl W. Hiersemann, Leipzig 1881.
  1. Erster Band: Statuen, Hermen, Büsten, Köpfe
  2. Zweiter Band: Sarkophagreliefs
  3. Dritter Band: Reliefs und Sonstiges

For no. 2912, e.g., Matz/Duhn provide this information:

Abgeb.: Gall. Giust. II, 80.
... which translates as: “Illustrated in Galleria Giustiniana II, plate 80” and matches the “serienummer 80” from above. That way, the identity is made sure. The archaeological information is “as of 1881” obviously, but it does provide a very valuable starting point.
Not all items will be found there. Some may have been sold to one of the “major collections” (museums) which are not covered by Matz/Duhn’s work, or may not be included for other reasons. Still, there is a good chance that the gap between the 17th century collection and today’s whereabouts of the sculptures can be bridged that way.
