Category:Grand Circlet of Queen Victoria

According to the Royal Collection, Queen Victoria had this "Grand or Regal Circlet" (RCIN 75003) made in 1858 by Garrard, but she wears it in a portrait by Winterhalter which was completed 10 May 1856 (RCIN 406698), along with a diamond necklace which "belonged to Queen Adelaide and was remade for Queen Victoria in 1853 by Garrard’s."

In 1859 Winterhalter painted a state portrait of her (RCIN 405131), in which the Royal Collection states that she is wearing "the circlet, and the earrings and necklace made by Garrard’s, the jewellers in 1858." This is somewhat ambiguous, as she is wearing the George IV State Diadem, which is in the form of a circlet, and a diamond necklace that appears very similar to the one she wears in the 1856 portrait (Queen Adelaide's).

Victoria apparently stopped using her "Grand or Regal Circlet" after she had a new, small Imperial crown made in 1870. Queen Mary wore it during the reign of George V. The diamonds were removed to create the coronation crown of Elizabeth, Queen Consort of George VI, and the empty frame is at the Museum of London.
