Category:Heraldic external ornaments (prince-archbishops, prince-bishops, prince-abbots)

Within the Holy Roman Empire, a prince-bishop was a bishop who was also the monarch of some secular principality. If the episcopal see was an archbishopric, the correct term was prince-archbishop; the equivalent in the monastic clergy was prince-abbot. With regard to heraldic ornaments, these dignitaries displayed all insignia of their ecclesiastical rank with the addition of the heraldic ornaments due to a prince of the Holy Roman Empire. Sometimes a sword (signifying temporal jurisdiction) was also added.
