English: Herminia Borchard Dassel (1821-1857), also known as Miss H. Borchard, American genre and portrait painter of German origin. Born in Königsberg, Prussia as Herminia Borchard, she became a professional painter after studying in Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. She resided in Italy but after the 1848 Italian revolution decided to emigrate to the United States where she married and set up a studio in New York City by 1849. She developed a professional career and exhibited at American Art-Union. In 1850, she became an honorary member of the National Academy of Design. In 1851, she traveled to Nantucket where she painted a portrait of Maria Mitchell, an astronomer, and two portraits of Abram Quary, who was at the time thought as the last full-blooded Native American on Nantucket Island (which later turned to be incorrect). She died suddenly in New York City and upon her death an artist committee headed by Henry Theodore Tuckerman organized a lottery for the benefit of her three children.
