English: A hymn is a type of song, written in praise of something or someone. The word hymn derives from the Greek
ὕμνος
, which means "song of praise".
  • A hymn may be religious, specifically written for the purpose of adoration or prayer, and typically addressed to a deity or deities, or to a prominent figure personification. Hymns are a significant part of Christian worship, but they also feature in other world religions, especially on the Indian subcontinent.
  • Hymns may also have a secular purpose, such as patriotic hymns, written in praise of a nation, or academic hymns which celebrate the merits of a college or university.
A writer of hymns is known as a hymnodist. The singing or composition of hymns is called hymnody. Collections of hymns are known as hymnals or hymn books. Hymns may or may not include instrumental accompaniment.
