Built in 1871, this Italianate-style house at 420 North Carroll Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was constructed for James Mears. The house is clad in buff brick with a low-slope hipped roof, front gable dormer, cornice with paired brackets and dentils, extruded corner pilasters and brick dentils framing the house’s facades, six-over-six windows, stone lintels and sills, a front porch from the early 20th century with square Doric columns and iron railings, a front door with a transom and sidelights, a stone base, a one-story bay window on the side with a cornice featuring dentils and brackets, a gabled rear ell, and a side porch with decorative brackets, a shed roof, and an open brick pier foundation.

The house is a contributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
