This memorial clock tower stands at the edge of the Quarry recreation gound on Rowson Street/Rake Lane/Mount Pleasant Road, New Brighton. The quarry was originally owned by Mary Ann Maddock, and it eventually passed to James Smith, a local cotton broker. He died in 1909 and this gateway, consisting of four arches with clocks to the front and rear, was erected. The inscription reads: "Friend to the poor, generous promoter to all good works. Erected in 1912 A.D, in grateful remembrance of James Smith, 1841-1909, who converted this quarry into a pleasure ground".
