John N Lawfer was a son of William R (W R) Lawfer, the founder of what would become the Zollinger-Harned department store. After his father's death in 1900, he left the W R Lawfer company partnership in 1904, selling his shares to his brother Alvan Lawfer and he started his own carpet and drapery store at 709 Hamilton Street, The company subsequently moved to 926 Hamilton Street in 1912.

Lawfer closed his Hamilton Street store in September 1923 due to ill health, and sold the property to his nephews, W. Levan and Stanley E. Lawfer, who owned the Lawfer Automotive Company at 12th and Hamilton Streets. He then began working from his home on 316 North Sixth Street. He retired in October 1926, and passed in July 1930.
