The kard is a straight-bladed Persian dagger. Originally from Iran, it eventually spread to Afghanistan and Central Asia. In South Asia it is often known as karud. They all have the same purpose: to penetrate mail armor, and for that purpose they can hardly be improved. They all have a similar shape of blade and differ in the shape of hilt and decoration.
