English: The Monastic Church of St. John's, once located between the streets Plan in the West and Hinter dem Breiten Giebel (behind the broad gable) in the East, named after the eastern gable diagonally closing the church nave to the east, and thussome what larger than the nave. The monastic church beloged to the Ss. John's Monastery, founded in 1236 by Count Adolphus IV of Holstein (House of Schauenburg) as a Dominican monastery consecrated to the saint patrons of John the Evangelist and John the Baptist. After a fire in 1314 the konastery had to be constructed completely new. In 1529, following the Protestant Reformation by Johannes Bugenhagen, the monastery was dissolved and the school of the Johanneum, newly founded by Bugenhagen, moved into parts of the monastery. In 1531 the inhabitants of the Herwardeshude nunnery, having become homeless by the closure of the monasteries, were housed by the Senate of Hamburg in the other part of the monastery, after having converted to Lutheran conventuals. The monastic church was transformed into a Lutheran church. The monastery and its church were demolished in 1840.
