Français : Le Devoir est une statue du sculpteur français René de Saint-Marceaux (1845– 1915) dont il existe quatre exemplaires connus:
English: Le Devoir ("The Duty") is a statue, work of French sculptor René de Saint-Marceaux (1845– 1915) of which there are 4 known copies:
  • The original stone statue which decorates the tomb of Pierre Tirard (1827-1893), a French Republican deputy and former President of the Council (Prime Minister), in the cemetery of Père-Lachaise (division 51) in Paris [1];
  • A similar stone statue, donated by the sculptor to the Reims high school (today the middle school Université) where he had studied and which is probably the one now in Musée des Beaux-Arts et d'Archéologie of Châlons-en-Champagne storage area[1];
  • A plaster sculpture in the back lobby of the Vichy town hall;
  • A bronze, made by the Parisian foundryman Gustave Leblanc-Barbedienne from this plaster in 1928, for the Monument of the French Souvenir in the cemetery of Vichy[1].
