Description from Auckland Museum: WW1 leather jerkin that belonged to 17735 Rifleman William Mandeno Smallfield, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade; sent to him in 1916 as a gift from his grandmother. brown leather; no collar; front opening with 10 brass eyelets either side for fastening; machine stitched; one large breast pocket sewn onto left facing; reinforced at armpit markings- owner's details marked in ink inside back- No. 17735. - Rifleman W.M. Smallfield - "B" Coy, 5th Platoon, - 1st Battalion. - 3rd N.Z. (R). B.
