English: The maddalam or madhalam is a drum made out of the wood of the jackfruit tree. It has two sides for playing, made out of leather, and has different kind of sounds on each side. The maddalam is a heavy instrument which is hung around the waist of the person playing, and the player stands all the while to perform.
Français : Le maddalam, mattalam ou madale est un instrument de percussion du sud de l'Inde. C'est un tambour en tonneau à deux faces. Il est utilisé dans la musique kéralaise rituelle par la caste des Mârârs.
മലയാളം: പല മേളപ്രയോഗങ്ങളിലും സവിശേഷമായ സ്ഥാനം അലങ്കരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വാദ്യമാണ് മദ്ദളം. മൃദംഗത്തിന്റെ വലിയ രൂപമായ മദ്ദളത്തിന് സംഗീതാത്മകത്വം ഉണ്ട്. കേളി, മദ്ദളക്കേളി, പഞ്ചവാദ്യം, കഥകളി, കൃഷ്ണനാട്ടം തുടങ്ങിയ പല കലാരൂപങ്ങൾക്കും ഒഴിച്ചുകൂടാനാവാത്ത ഒരു വാദ്യമാണ് മദ്ദളം.
