A major Shaiva pilgrimage site near Nallamala hills, the Mahanandi temple is located near the Thimmapuram village – in an area called Mahanandi – about 10 miles east of Nandyal via SH 403 highway. This temple is from the early Chalukyan period (7th-century), but one expanded, targeted, destroyed in Deccan Hindu-Muslim wars, restored many times by Hindu kingdoms between the 10th and 16th-centuries. It is notable for hosting one of the largest Nandi statues in India, and for three square pushkarani (water tanks) fed by a natural spring and historically named after Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra – the Hindu trinity. A scenic attraction for tourists, it is one of the holy pilgrimage (tirtha) sites for Hindus of the Shiva tradition particularly during Shivaratri festivals. In the 1950s, a temple dedicated to Rama, Lakshmana and Sita was added near the Mahanandi temple.
