Category:Malta by Edward Lear
- Edward Lear (1812-1888) first visited Malta in 1848 and between then and 1866 he returned a further five times. He visited Malta for the penultimate time between December, 1865, and April, 1866, the longest of eight spells on the island, stopping there again only very briefly in December 1866, on his way to Egypt.
- Despite these numerous returns to Malta, Lear was ambivalent towards the place, as expressed in a letter to his sister, in 1848, “I cannot remember to have left any place with so much regret after so short a stay in it. But I could not live at Malta ― there is hardly a bit of green in the whole island ― a hot sandstone, wall, & bright white houses are all you can see from the highest places”. [1]
- Edward Lear’s travels were motivated by his desire to escape the damp winters of his native London and by his incessant search for new landscapes to paint. On his way to the milder climes of Greece and the Middle East, he frequently made stopovers in Malta. In 1865-66, however, he made the island his final destination. During that four-month visit, he painted nearly 300 on-site and a few dozen studio watercolours. [2]
- Lear's final sojourn to Malta lasted from December 1865 to March 1866, he worked from a house at 9 Strada Torri, Sliema with his servant Giorgio Cocali "my good servant George" as his principle companion. [3]
- The exhibition ‘Edward Lear: Watercolours and Words’ run at Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, Mdina from 18 October 2014 to 4 January 2015. The exhibition, which is organized by Palazzo Falson on behalf of Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti, is guest-curated by John Varriano, Professor Emeritus of Art History at Mount Holyoke College, Massachusetts, who is also the author of a book published by Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti on Lear in Malta. This show brings together a number of these watercolours in an innovative display which matches up the works with Lear’s corresponding diary notes, giving us an unprecedented insight into the artist’s state of mind and working method at the time.
