An augmentation of honour was granted in 1525 by King Henry VIII to Thomas Manners, 12th Baron de Ros of Helmsley, of Belvoir Castle in Liecestershire, on his creation as w:Earl of Rutland, in recognition of his descent in the maternal line from King Edward IV, whose younger brother was w:Edmund, Earl of Rutland: A chief quarterly azure and gules the 1st and 4th quarters charged with two fleurs-de-lis or and the 2nd and 3rd a lion of England (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.656). The augmented chief is thus a derivative of the royal arms of Henry VIII.
