Category:Militia Council of Canada

English: From 1763 to prior to the Confederation of Canada in 1867, the British Army provided the main defence of Canada. As British troops began to leave Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the importance of the Canadian militia (comprising various cavalry, artillery, infantry and engineer units) became more pronounced, and Canada's entry into the Second Boer War ignited a debate on what form Canada's armed forces should take. As a result, a series of reforms were instituted in 1904, including the establishment of a Militia Council (similar to the British Army Council), to include the Minister of Militia and Defence, his deputy minister and the departmental accountant, along with the chief of the general staff, the adjutant-general, the quartermaster-general and the master general of ordnance.
