English: A low type of toque in black velvet, called mortier (also rendered in English as mortar board), is the traditional headgear of various French magistrates. It was used by the président à mortier, president of a parlement (the royal highest court in a French province), and of the members of two of the highest central courts, Cour de cassation and Cour des Comptes. A similar red toque is sometimes worn by German judges, primarily by justices on the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. The pleated, low, round hat worn in French universities—the equivalent of the mortarboard or tam at British and American universities—is also called a mortier.
Français : Le mortier est le couvre-chef de certains magistrats dans les pays de tradition germano-canonique. Les couleurs de la ou des bandes changent en fonction du degré de juridiction ou du type de juridiction. Un mortier de juge sera orné d'argenté, un mortier de Président, de rouge ou de doré, etc. Dans l'ordre judiciaire français, les magistrats des deux premiers degrés de juridiction (première instance et cours d'appel) portent en réalité une toque, indûment assimilée au mortier, pourtant réservé à la Cour de Cassation, et qui est de forme différente.
