City Center 55th Street Theater was built in 1922-1924 as the Mecca Temple for the Ancient Order of Nobles of the Mystical Shrine (Shriners). The architect, Harry P. Knowles, died in 1923 before the project was completed, ans he was succeeded by the firm of Clinton & Russell. Renovations to the facade began in the 1990s, overseen by Bernard Rothzein. The Mecca Templae was never a financial success, and the city forclosed on it in 1942. Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia had the idea of turning it into a cultural center, the City Center of Music and Dance, which opened in 1943. The building was designated a NYC landmark in 1983.
