The Planters Peanut store in Allentown opened in October 1927, when the National Peanut Corporation opened its store at the Americus Hotel selling hot Planter's Peanuts. It operated for a brief time, and closed in March 1928. In November 1936, National Peanut reopened at a new location, 722 Hamilton Street where it operated successfully for decades. .

In April 1960, the "Nut Hut" opened in a stand at the newly expanded Allentown Fairgrounds Farmers Market, which had opened a new wing in 1958. The stand began by selling a wide variety of various types of nuts. In October 1961 the Planters store on Hamilton Street was sold by National Peanut and was purchased by Robert H Wessner, the owner of the Fairgrounds "Nut Hut". Wessner kept the stand at the Fairgounds Farmer's Market and operated both locations for several decades. In addition, the Nut Hut had locations at the Quakertown Farmer's Market, Whitehall Mall, Trexler Mall, and the Parkway Shopping Center in Allentown.

Nut Hut closed all of its locations except at the Allentown Fairgrounds in late 1993 after filing for bankruptcy, and the company was put up for sale, its assets being sold. The Fairgrounds location was lastly closed in February, 1994. However, the company was purchased in April 1994 by Susan Barthol, and was re-opened the Allentown Fairgrounds "Big Market" location where it remains today.
